The dynamics and evolution of rifts and continental rifted margins have been the subject of intense study and debate for many years and still remain the focus of active investigation. The 2006 AGU Fall Meeting session 'Extensional Processes Leading to the Formation of Basins and Rifted Margins, From Volcanic to Magma-Limited' included several contributions that illustrated recent advances in our understanding of rifting processes, from the early stages of extension to breakup and incipient seafloor spreading. Following this session, we aimed to assemble a multi-disciplinary collection of papers focussing on the architecture, formation and evolution of continental rift zones and rifted margins. This Tectonophysics Special Issue 'Role of magmatism in continental lithosphere extension' comprises 14 papers that present some of the recent insights on rift and rifted margins dynamics, emphasising the role of magmatism in extensional processes. The purpose of this contribution is to introduce these papers.

A major rifting episode began in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia in September 2005. Over a ten-day period, c. 2.5 km3 of magma were intruded along a 60 km-long dyke separating the Arabian and Nubian plates. Over the next five years, a further 13 dyke intrusions caused continued extension, eruptions and seismicity. This activity led to a renewed international focus on the role of magmatism in rifting, with major international collaborative projects working in Afar and Ethiopia to study the ongoing activity and to place it in a broader context. This book brings together articles that explore the role of magmatism in rifting, from the initiation of continental break-up through to full seafloor spreading. We also explore the hazards related to rifting and the associated volcanism. This work has implications for our understanding of how continents break-up and the associated distribution of resources in rift basins and continental margins.

Continental margins and their fossilized analogues are important repositories of natural resources. With better processing techniques and increased availability of high-resolution seismic and potential field data, imaging of present-day continental margins and their embedded sedimentary basins has reached unprecedented levels of refinement and definition, as illustrated by examples described in this volume. This, in turn, has led to greatly improved geological, geodynamic and numerical models for the crustal and mantle processes involved in continental margin formation from the initial stages of rifting through continental rupture and break-up to development of a new ocean basin. Further informing these models, and contributing to a better understanding of the features imaged in the seismic and potential field data, are observations made on fossilized fragments of exhumed subcontinental mantle lithosphere and ocean–continent transition zones preserved in ophiolites and orogenic belts of both Palaeozoic and Mesozoic age from several different continents, including Europe, South Asia and Australasia.

This volume celebrates Professor Ian Gass, covering many of the subjects which most interested him, especially processes operating in oceanic crust. The introductory papers examine evolution of magmas from mantle melting to eruption. A central section concerns ophiolite complexes. Several papers focus on different aspects of the Troodos ophiolite complex in Cyprus. In addition, ophiolites are reviewed and examined. A further section concentrates on tectonics and the genesis of magmas associated with collision and subduction. This contrasts with continental rifting and the effects of mantle plumes.

Mesozoic Rifting Along The Eastern Seaboard Of North America written by Drew Richard Eddy and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

Passive margins along the eastern seaboard of North America formed during early Mesozoic continental rifting and seafloor spreading, tectonic processes that are not fully understood. Seismic refraction and reflection data at the northeastern and north-central Gulf of Mexico and the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, Canada, is used to interpret the deep seismic velocity structure of sediments, crust, and mantle, allowing for a better understanding of continental rifting, mantle upwelling, magmatism, and seafloor spreading. Rifting of the Newfoundland-Iberian margin was a magma-poor event, developing a wide continent-ocean transition zone (COT). I present a new analysis of 2-D marine seismic refraction and reflection data from the SCREECH project, including a shear velocity model to constrain the composition of the COT. Comparing Vp/Vs ratios with depth at SCREECH Line 2 to potential lithologies for the Newfoundland COT suggests the presence of hyperextended continental crust and serpentinized mantle. Reconstructions of the opening of the Gulf of Mexico basin are impeded by a lack of seafloor magnetic anomalies and thick sediments that have obscured the acquisition of early seismic refraction datasets. Accordingly, the role of mantle upwelling, magmatism, and lithospheric extension in this small ocean basin are poorly known. I present new 2-D marine seismic refraction data from the U.S. Gulf of Mexico that I collected during the 2010 GUMBO project. Rifting in the eastern Gulf of Mexico developed a volcanic margin above a zone of anomalously high mantle potential temperatures. Evidence for syn-rift basins in continental crust, a high velocity lower crust, a ~100 km-wide zone of crustal thinning, and seaward-dipping reflections support this interpretation. Oceanic crust here is thick and plate reconstructions suggest slow seafloor-spreading rates, implying the sustained presence of a thermal anomaly. In the north-central Gulf of Mexico, transitional crust is consistently thin (~10 km) across a width of ~300 km. Velocity-depth comparisons, asymmetry of the north-central Gulf with the conjugate Yucatán margin, and evidence from mantle xenoliths in Louisiana support an interpretation of highly stretched, initially magma-poor continental crust with post-rift magmatic additions from melting of a depleted mantle shortly after the onset of Gulf-wide seafloor spreading.

Volcanoes are unquestionably one of the most spectacular and awe-inspiring features of the physical world. Our paradoxical fascination with them stems from their majestic beauty and powerful, sometimes deadly, destructiveness. Notwithstanding the tremendous advances in volcanology since ancient times, some of the mystery surrounding volcanic eruptions remains today. The Encyclopedia of Volcanoes summarizes our present knowledge of volcanoes; it provides a comprehensive source of information on the causes of volcanic eruptions and both the destructive and beneficial effects. The early chapters focus on the science of volcanism (melting of source rocks, ascent of magma, eruption processes, extraterrestrial volcanism, etc.). Later chapters discuss human interface with volcanoes, including the history of volcanology, geothermal energy resources, interaction with the oceans and atmosphere, health aspects of volcanism, mitigation of volcanic disasters, post-eruption ecology, and the impact of eruptions on organismal biodiversity. Provides the only comprehensive reference work to cover all aspects of volcanology Written by nearly 100 world experts in volcanology Explores an integrated transition from the physical process of eruptions through hazards and risk, to the social face of volcanism, with an emphasis on how volcanoes have influenced and shaped society Presents hundreds of color photographs, maps, charts and illustrations making this an aesthetically appealing reference Glossary of 3,000 key terms with definitions of all key vocabulary items in the field is included
