Arctic sea ice has been declining rapidly since 1979. Larger areas of open ocean allow more energy absorption and surface-atmosphere energy and moisture exchanges especially during summer. Therefore, sea ice in turn modulates local climate and potentially the global climate system. Many studies have investigated influences of Arctic atmospheric circulations on sea ice. Yet few have studied the climatic effects of declining Arctic sea ice cover during the warm season. This study explores the relationship between summer Arctic sea-ice area and subsequent winter North Atlantic Oscillation and the mechanisms that may link them across the annual cycle. Statistically significant positive correlations are found between summer sea-ice area and subsequent winter NAO. Approximately 30% of the winter NAO variance can be explained by summer sea-ice area. In addition, strong correlations between Arctic summer sea-ice area and subsequent winter sea-level pressure, 500-hPa geopotential height, surface air and SST fields are found. All these relationships, except SSTs, depict the dipole structure characterized by the NAO, the simultaneous strengthening and weakening of the Azores high and the Icelandic low. From these results, neutral or negative NAO phase is to be expected in winters after low sea-ice summers; positive NAO phase is expected in winters after summers with larger than average sea-ice area. Physical processes that lead to this relationship are explored and proposed. With low summer sea-ice area, energy to the Arctic Ocean is increased, which increases regional surface air temperatures and SSTs through autumn into winter. Positive temperature anomalies in the Arctic are likely to increase 500-hPa geopotential heights and surface pressures near Iceland and to reduce meridional temperature gradients between the pole and the subtropics. These effects lead to a weakened Icelandic Low, a weakened polar jet stream and a weak storm track. Therefore, increased summer sea-ice area is associated with the negative phase of the NAO.
