Pre-colonial Africa was, in most parts, matriarchal, matrilineal and, in some parts, martifocal. Women had leadership roles in abundance. A dual sex political system in which each sex managed its own affairs prevailed. The males were governed by queen-mothers known as Omu by the Igbo, Kentake by the Cush, Nandi by the Zulu, Lyalode by the Yoruba, Ohemaa in Ashanti, Indlovukati in South Africa and Candmu Kule by the Bemba. Womenņs interests were represented at all levels. Women in pre-colonial Africa achieved recognition and distinction. They were queens, elders, priestesses and the titled elites. They were independent. They controlled the market, the farm, and ultimately the economy. Things began to fall apart starting with the western colonization of Africa. Europeans were patriarchal, hence the canceled out the female institution and replaced female leaders with males. Women fought back in various ways, the most outstanding of which was the Igbo Women War of 1929.

An interdisciplinary study of market women from all parts of Africa shows how, from historical times to the present, African women have used the economic power they have derived from market activities and commercial enterprises to improve their social and political status in a man's world. They used their wealth in pre-colonial times to obtain titles and even chieftainship. Because of their involvement in trade, many women acquired considerable property, especially real estate. The authors stress the positive aspect of women's economic activities, but also point out the prevalent sexual division of labor in Africa as a limiting factor. They illustrate the concomitant struggle between men and women over certain market items traditionally associated with one or the other sex. They analyze the cultural, social, and economic barriers that restrict female involvement in some economic activities. Nevertheless, the overwhelming conclusion by all of the writers, who are Africans and Americans, is that women play a major role in the economic sector of all the regions of the continent.

This 1973 book analyses the changing position of women in an urban context in sub-Saharan Africa. In spite of the fact that women, at the time of publication, were often important leaders of opinion and in these countries the proportion of women in professional work was at least as large as in Britain, few researchers and even fewer television and newspaper reporters paid them sufficient attention. As the new role of women in Africa was peculiarly a phenomenon of the city, Professor Little's book uses the concept of urbanization in order to analyse the radical changes taking place. He shows how certain women's movements were growing out of the African woman's desire for a new relationship with the man. This leads him to consider the part played by women in the political arena, and women's position not only in monogamous marriage, but also in extra-marital and sexual relationships.
