Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III PENGUINS AND THEIR WAYS UNCROWNED KINGS AND EMPERORS INNOCENT ARMIES SURF MISSED IN A BASIN DARWIN AND THE PENGUIN HARANGUING THE PENGUINNERY. A1ONGST the strangest and, as Buffon calls them, the most unbirdlike-looking of all birds, are the penguins?an aquatic family, numbering many species, whose headquarters are the wide waters of the southern seas, as far as to the remotest parts that have yet been explored. Wherever, indeed, the land that lies around the southern pole has a coastline, it is probable that penguins lay their eggs and rear their young; and the best hope for their continuing to do so is that some parts of this area may be too remote, or have too rigorous a climate to admit of its being often visited by mankind. Wherever sailors go, these poor birds, besides being plundered of their eggs, are destroyed in thousands, so that if every one of their breeding-haunts were to be visited each year, they would before long become extinct. On some islands, indeed, they are protected, but a modicum of protection accorded to a bird is not of much avail as against a vast amount of slaughter. Independently of what it may suffer in unequal warfare with the greed and brutality of man, every species bas to hold its own in thegeneral struggle for life, and when reduced to very small numbers, it may be unable to do so. The Falkland Islands, which lie far down off the western coast of South America, were once amongst the most popular breeding- resorts for various species of penguins, but now, says Professor Newton, owing doubtless to the ravages of man, whose advent is always accompanied by massacre and devastation on an enormous scale, it does not nearly approach to what it is in other places?the habit of the helpless birds, when breeding, to congregate b...

Humans do not need words to express their feelings. They can use a smile, offer a gift or simply be there. In this way, we humans are a lot like our animal friends. Even when spiders, fish, birds, in other word all types of animals are young and meet someone they like, sparks fly and love is born. Each animal has its own way to win the heart of a mate that in some cases will be its mate for life. This book is a collection of love stories starring romantically monogamous animals like wolves, eagles, lovebirds and penguins. There are also the stories of animals whose courting rituals are surprisingly creative, like the dance of the blue-footed booby or the synchronous flashing of fireflies. The result is truly an ode to love, tender and ironic, fun and colourful, thanks to the stunning images created by Isabella Grott. AGES: 7 plus AUTHOR: Valter Fogato. Is one of ADMaiora's collaborators of excellence: as an advertiser, graphic designer, illustrator and author of not only scientific educational works, he has designed and set up a big number of dioramas for various museums and visitor's centres in natural parks, including writing their explanatory panels.

Can horses feel shame? Do deer grieve? Why do roosters deceive hens? We tend to assume that we are the only living things able to experience feelings but have you ever wondered what’s going on in an animal’s head? From the leafy forest floor to the inside of a bee hive, The Inner Life of Animals opens up the animal kingdom like never before. We hear the stories of a grateful humpback whale, of a hedgehog who has nightmares, and of a magpie who commits adultery; we meet bees that plan for the future, pigs who learn their own names and crows that go tobogganing for fun. And at last we find out why wasps exist.

Charles G.D. Roberts's fame rests on a series of very popular animal stories. Charles G.D. Roberts was a distinguished writer of his time who published more than forty volumes of poetry, romance fiction, and nature writing - making him one of the most popular writers of his time. He pioneered the animal story in which he went beyond surface elements of nature and endowed his animal ''''characters'''' with qualities of feeling and intelligence that brought them closer to their human cousins. Roberts' career as a writer transcended his Canadian roots and he was internationally known and popular in America and England. What was particularly appreciated by his readers was Roberts' close observation of nature and his efforts to endow animals with emotions and understand their mental processes. By 1932, Kindred of the Wild had been re-issued twenty-three times, attesting to its ongoing appeal. Roberts was knighted for his contribution to literature and his services in the Allied cause in the First World War.
