Excerpt from The Romance of Words A long and somewhat varied experience in language teaching has convinced me that there are still, in spite of the march of science, many people who are capable Of getting intellectual pleasure from word-history. I hope that to such people this little book, the amusement Of occasional leisure, will not be unwelcome. It differs, I believe, from any other popular book on language in that it deals essentially with the origins of words, and makes no attempt to enforce a moral. My aim has been to select especially the unexpected in etymology. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from An English Girl: A Romance She sank down upon one of the hard-seated, fine, mahogany chairs before she uttered the word "How - !" But she was unable to furnish any adjective. The situation was beyond her: she could say neither "How tremendous!" "How terrible!" nor yet "How magnificent!" You may guess at a person's character very efficiently by considering his first abstract remark upon any given happening. Tall, rather dark, with rounded cheeks, hair arranged high on her head, tight-fitting park dress, and a slow, elastic gait, and with her self-control and her clear lines - she was called Eleanor Greville - you could not deny the epithet "fine" to her, or to the room or to the atmosphere that surrounded her. And four days before she would at least have been ready to give as much insight into her personality: she would at least have been able to utter some moralisation if she had heard that overwhelming wealth had fallen to the share of any of her intimates. But, from the Monday on which the first news of his father's death had been cabled from across the water, she had seemed to be lifted out of contact with her own personality. The death had been denied on Tuesday, re-affirmed on the Wednesday by indignant Transatlantic journalists, and redenied on the Thursday by vastly more indignant Wall Street authorities, who claimed to have "seen him" the night before. Excerpt from The Book of Romance IT is to be supposed that children do not read Prefaces these are Bluebeard's rooms, which they are not curious to unlock. A few words may therefore be said about the Romances contained in this book. In the editor's Opinion, romances are only fairy tales grown up. The whole mass of the plot and incident of romance was invented by nobody knows who, nobody knows when, nobody knows where. Almost every people has the Cinderella story, with all sorts Of variations a boy hero in place Of a girl heroine, a beast in place of a fairy godmother, and so on. The Zunis, an agricultural tribe of New Mexico, have a version in which the moral turns out to be against poor Cinderella, who comes to an ill end. The Red Indians have the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, told in a very touching shape, but without the music. On the other hand, the negroes in the States have the Orpheus tale, adapted to plantation life, in a form which is certainly borrowed from Europeans. This version was sent to me some years ago, by Mr. Barnet Phillips, Brooklyn, New York, and I give it here for its curiosity. If the proper names, Jim Orpus and Dicey, had not been given, we might not feel absolutely certain that the story was borrowed. It is a good example of adaptation from the heroic age of Greece to the servile age Of Africans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Dramana: A Romance of the Stage Ah, how true are the words of the Bard of Avon! All the world is a stage for the many and varied scenes of comedy and tragedy, of melodrama and farce. Actors of to-day are striving for truism, for realism. Acting, appealing to the differ ent emotions of man, is regarded as one of the fine arts, and is rightly classed so. The tragedies of life are in themselves too realistic, and, to think of it, there is very little comedy in a worldly existence. Yet why should man cry out against the tragedies in life? Sorrows must come. The Great One so ordained it. The dark clouds have their silver linings and the great shadows only in tensify the more the glorious golden sun shine. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The New English, Vol. 1As to my Index, I have, as a general rule, con fined myself to Teutonic and Celtic words, and also to those Romance words which have some peculiarity. Had I inserted every Romance word I name, I must have brought out a third Volume. I have derived much benefit from criticism on my former works; this has reached me partly in print, partly by letter; I hope for many fresh comments on my New English, ' and to this end I have given my address.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Romance of the Civil War The higher age of the pupils who will use this book and the nature of the subject, have made possible some differences between this volume and those that precede it. In the first place, fewer changes have been made in the selections; the authors are more nearly contemporary, and their style needs little or no change to make it com prehensible, so that omissions have been made chiefly for the sake of brevity; further, children of say twelve years old can easily look up for themselves such words and phrases as they do not at once understand. Excerpt from Wood and Stone: A Romance Is there such a thing at all as Nietzsche's born and trained aristocracy? In other words, is the secret of the universe to be reached only along the lines of Power, Courage, and Pride? Or, - on the contrary, - is the hidden and basic law of things, not Power but Sacrifice, not Pride but Love? Granting, for the moment, that this latter alterna tive is the true one, what becomes of the drastic distinction between well-constituted and ill-con stituted? Enemies of Garrick, however, suggested to him that he was put in the background, that the manager was jealous of his talents, and purposely kept him out of the lover characters.
