An international sensation,The Royal Physician's Visitmagnificently recasts the dramatic era of Danish history when Johann Friedrich Struensee -- court physician to mad young King Christian -- stepped through an aperture in history and became the holder of absolute power in Denmark. His is a gripping tale of power, sex, love, and the life of the mind, and it is superbly rendered here by one of Sweden's most acclaimed writers. A charismatic German doctor and brilliant intellectual, Struensee used his influence to introduce hundreds of reforms in Denmark in the 1760s. He had a tender and erotic affair with Queen Caroline Mathilde, who was unsatisfied by her unstable, childlike husband. Yet Struensee lacked the subtlety of a skilled politician and the cunning to choose enemies wisely; these flaws proved fatal, and would eventually lead to his tragic demise.

Adultery, insanity, back-stabbing and blue blood in 18th century Denmark . . . The winner of THE INDEPENDENT FOREIGN FICTION PRIZE, Sweden's AUGUST PRIZE and France's Best Foreign Book Award It is the 1760s, the height of the Enlightenment, a time of great promise and transformation across Europe, but in the state of Denmark something is rotten. The young king, Christian VII, is a half-wit. His queen, the English princess Caroline Mathilde, has fallen in love his most trusted advisor, the court physician, Struensee, who is engaged in a bitter ideological battle with the head of the diplomatic corps, Guldberg. Gulberg, a cold-blooded religious fanatic, is determined too annihilate the Enlightenment ideals - which threaten to improve the lot of the peasantry and to support freedom of the press - that Struensee is introducing to Denmark. Whoever prevails will not only control the king but the nation state. The victor will impress his legacy on the kingdom: either Struensee's free-thinking principles or the repressive proscriptions of Guldberg. Enquist's masterpiece, acclaimed throughout Europe, is a superb examination of the clash between the raptures of love and the certainties of dogma, the torments of the flesh and the enticements of power. It is an unforgettable introduction to a fascinating period in European history.

In this book, acclaimed biographer Raymond Lamont-Brown casts light on a previously overlooked aspect of the monarchy. From the instigation of the royal doctor in medieval times, to the present day, the tales of secrets, murder, medical incompetence and revolutionary operations revealed in this book make compelling reading. This is a fascinating look at the relationship between monarchs and their doctors and reveals the complex and influential position that they held. Included here are Sir William Gull, court physician to Queen Victoria, who was a suspect in the Jack the Ripper case, and Sir Frederick Treves, who not only was court physician to the four succeeding monarchs, but was also the man who helped to rescue the 'Elephant Man', Joseph Merrick, from a fairground freak show.

This book is a Revelation of Divine Healing. The first healing I ever saw was in 1979 when a man with a withered arm was standing up at the front in Mabelreign Chapel in Salisbury, Rhodesia. I was a deacon in the church at the time and happened to be home for a few days from military call-up. An evangelist from South Africa was visiting the Chapel. Here is what happened.I had my seat in the front row next to Callie. The evangelist had finished preaching and had called the sick to the front of the church. He started to pray for the sick on the lefthand side of the church. I noticed an elderly man standing on the righthand side of the church quite a distance from the evangelist and he had a withered arm. He lifted both his arms above his head. No one was touching him. I saw his withered arm grow and become like his other one, normal. I was stunned and so excited about what had just happened. He started yelling in excitement and jumped up and down so so happy that he was healed. I was changed for life. That had such an impact not only on the whole church but on many who witnessed it happening in front of their eyes. No man but Jesus touched him as he lifted his arms in faith.Later I was studying Medicine at the University of Rhodesia. During lunch breaks, I would sometimes join up with a Christian group on campus who would show films of William Branham and A. A. Allen performing miracles during the Great Awakening Revivals. Many a day I watched and would have tears running down my cheeks as I so wanted to do the same as these men. They knew how to flow in the supernatural power of God.After 40 years of ministry around the world, my wife and I have seen many healings and miracles. Some people being healed instantly, some over time and some not receiving healing at all. We have always wanted to see people experience the compassion and mercy of God on their lives. So our lives have been focused on Jesus: His love for humanity and from the start of His ministry He healed the sick wherever He went. This book is a discovery of Divine Healing. As we have taken the word of God and our experiences and of being lead by the Holy Spirit we have put together our 'thesis' with the desire to help both those who are sick and those who want to preach, teach and empower other saints to do the same. Some points may be revisited in the different chapters only to clarify the significant truth to be made.We do not have all the answers and don't expect to as we are still students. We have wanted to leave a legacy for the generations to come who will carry the sword and the oil - the word of God and His power - to set captives free. The Royal Physician is not about a residing Doctor of Medicine for a Royal Family. The Royal Physician is The King Himself, Jesus Christ the Son of God, who has the power to cause His subjects to be totally whole in spirit soul and body, when they follow Him.The oldest practice on earth is Divine Healing.PrefaceIt came before any invention, discovery and science. He is "The Royal Physician

Drawing upon a myriad of primary and secondary historical sources, The Royal Doctors: Medical Personnel at the Tudor and Stuart Courts investigates the influential individuals who attended England's most important patientsduring a pivotal epoch in the evolution of the state and the medical profession. Drawing upon a myriad of primary and secondary historical sources, The Royal Doctors: Medical Personnel at the Tudor and Stuart Courts investigates the influential individuals who attended England's most important patientsduring a pivotal epoch in the evolution of the state and the medical profession. Over three hundred men [and a handful of women], heretofore unexamined as a group, made up the medical staff of the Tudor and Stuart kings and queensof England [as well as the Lord Protectorships of Oliver and Richard Cromwell]. The royal doctors faced enormous challenges in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries from diseases that respected no rank and threatened the very security of the realm. Moreover, they had to weather political and religious upheavals that led to regicide and revolution, as well as cope with sharp theoretical and jurisdictional divisions within English medicine. The rulers often interceded in medical controversies at the behest of their royal doctors, bringing sovereign authority to bear on the condition of medicine. Elizabeth Lane Furdell is Professor of History at the University of NorthFlorida.

This book explores the genre of the historical novel and the variety of ways in which writers choose to represent the past, demonstrating how histories can communicate across national borders, often by invoking or deconstructing the very notion of nationhood. It traces how concerns of the postmodern era such as critiques of historiography, colonialism, identity, and the Enlightenment, have impacted the genre of the historical novel, and shows this impact has not been uniform throughout Western culture. Historical novels from England, America, Germany, and France are compared and contrasted with historical novels from Sweden, testing a variety of theoretical perspectives in the process.
