The name of Nobel usually calls to mind Alfred Nobel, inventor of dynamite, and the internationally prestigious prizes that bear his name. But Alfred was only one member of a creative and innovative family who built an industrial empire in prerevolutionary Russia. The saga begins with an emigrÉ from Sweden, Immanuel Nobel, who was an architect, a pioneer producer of steam engines, and a maker of armaments, including the underwater mines that were widely used in the Crimean War. Immanuel's sons included Alfred; Robert, who directed the family's activities in the Caspian oil fields; and Ludwig, an engineering genius and manufacturing magnate whose boundless energy and fierce determination created the Russian petroleum industry. Ludwig's son Emanuel showed similar mettle, shrewdly bargaining with the Rothschilds for control of the Russian markets and competing head-on with Standard Oil, Royal Dutch, and Shell for lucrative world markets. Emanuel not only expanded the Russian oil industry but also helped to modernize the Russian navy and commanded a fleet of three hundred ships. Perhaps no family in history has played so decisive a role in building an industrial empire in an underdeveloped but resource-rich nation. Yet the achievements of the Nobel family have been largely forgotten. The alliance had been longstanding, but based upon competition, with each aspiring to outmaneuver the other to emerge as the penultimate world leader. Drawing upon revolutionary tactics refined by the Rothschilds, the Rockefellers financed the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia to eliminate Russia's industry as competition to their own and to seize its valuable natural resources, a strategy the dynasties had employed many times before to their own benefit. After the World Wars, Rockefeller built up Russia with U.S. military and technology with a view of governing their new world order from that country. To that end, the United States would have to be weakened to the point in which it could merge seamlessly with Russia. By the 1970s, Russia purged its Bolsheviks and reclaimed the country for native interests. Expecting the Bolsheviks to be loyal, the Rockefellers placed them in key positions of power. Owing their loyalty to the Rothschilds, the Bolsheviks staged a private coup against the Rockefellers. The Russians held more advanced technology, preventing the dynasty's return to power. Now entrenched in the American power structure, the Bolsheviks have attempted to stoke revolution in with a view to seizing control of the United States and the world, but are being blocked by the Russians who view such an inevitably catastrophic to its own self-interests. Part of the Satanic end game for the Bolsheviks is nuclear wear, starting with a strike on Iran and eventually leading to nuclear strike against Russia and the United States. Aware of Russia's refusal to go along with Bolshevik plans for a new world order, the Rockefellers and Rothschilds built up China to menace Russia as part of a divide-and-conquer strategy only to have Russian and China forge an alliance to pursue a new Belt and Road Initiative to establish their own global market. The Russians have the upper hand by virtue of their possession of superior technology, leading to the American political establishment's hysteria over Russian conspiracies along with infighting among its elites as the original group who originally set the United States on a dangerous road to perdition has lost control. Now competing factions are battling for control of the country, with a new power structure forming that is more sinister and satanic than the one that preceded it. The early Soviet Union’s nationalities policy involved the formation of many national republics, within which "nation building" and "modernization" were undertaken for the benefit of "backward" peoples. This book, in considering how such policies were implemented in Azerbaijan, argues that the Soviet policies were in fact a form of imperialism, with "nation building" and "modernization" imposed firmly along Soviet lines. The book demonstrates that in Azerbaijan, and more widely among western Turkic peoples, the Volga and Crimean Tatars, there were before the onset of Soviet rule, well developed, forward looking, secular, national movements, which were not at all "backward" and were different from the Soviets. The book shows how in the period 1920 to 1940 the two different visions competed with each other, with eventually the pre-Soviet vision of Azerbaijani culture losing out, and the Soviet version dominating in a new Soviet Azerbaijani culture. The book examines the details of this Sovietization of culture: in language policy and the change of the alphabet, in education, higher education and in literature. The book concludes by exploring how pre-Soviet Azerbaijani culture survived to a degree underground, and how it was partially rehabilitated after the death of Stalin and more fully in the late Soviet period.
