Excerpt from The Memoirs of Rufus Putnam: And Certain Official Papers and Correspondence In the Ohio State Convention of 1802, when the first Constitution was adopted, the champions of slav ery were so nearly in the ascendant that Rufus Put nam, then an old man, called up Ephraim Cutler, son of Manasseh, from his Sick-bed late at night, told him that there was danger that slavery would be estab lished by the Convention, and with Cutler's aid suc ceeded in defeating it by a single vote. But for Rufus Putnam, the great Northwest Territory would to-day be made up of slave States. The United States would have been a great slaveholding empire, and if the Civil War had taken place at all, the power of this mighty group of commonwealths would have turned the scale on the Southern side. Excerpt from Rufus Putnam, Founder and Father of Ohio: An Address on the Occasion of Placing a Tablet to the Memory of Rufus Putnam, Upon His Dwelling-House in Rutland, 17 September, A. D. 1898 Cutler returned to Massachusetts successful and in triumph. He was not himself one of the first settlers in Ohio, but his sons represented him. Putnam led his company down the Ohio River to Marietta on board a galley appropriately named the Mayflower, giving new honor and fragrance to the name. He landed with his little company of forty-eight men April 7, 1788. It would have been settled from Virginia and Kentucky. As it was, it was saved to freedom as by fire.. A majority of the people of Illinois was pro-slavery, and the recognition of slavery in the first constitution of that State was only prevented by the dexterity and sagacity of Governor Coles.
