Excerpt from The Sad Years To think of Dora Sigerson - and it is a poignant thought - takes one back to Dublin in the 'nineties, or the later 'eighties. I think it was on a summer Sunday in 1887 that Dr. Sigerson came to see me with his two daughters and Rose Kavanagh, whom I already knew. The Yeatses were there that Sunday for the big meal at a most unfashionable hour, which was a feature of those years for the young writers and artists of Dublin. My old home was in the country, just under the Dublin mountains, and, I think, a very delightful place. Everyone, of course, knew Dr. Sigerson by repute. The house was full of the young that day, with just a sprinkling of the young of heart like Mr. Yeats and my father and Dr. Sigerson. I remember that my brother said to me, "Miss Sigerson is very beautiful." She was. Her face then had some curious suggestion of the Greek Hermes. She wore her dark hair short, and it was in heavy masses. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Songs of Seven Years An Introduction The heart baa thoughts too sacred for the tongue - Or, if at all the profane oracle Have leave to babble them, they must be said In riddles, as the secrets of old fanes Once unto men thus darkly were disclosed In the flawed mirror of such speech as mine. The curious foot, irreverent, presses now Among the fallen sacred columns old Of those mute temples; now within my breast The alien presences may take their way But hear no fateful voice or, if at all They hear, oft guess not what the sound implies. The sad, deep whispers of mysterious lips Are borne upon me - if ye hear, attend! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This digital edition allows young readers and lifelong fans to continue the legacy and love of a classic that will now reach an even wider audience. "Once there was a tree...and she loved a little boy." So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein. This moving parable for all ages offers a touching interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another's capacity to love in return. Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk...and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave and gave. This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein's incomparable career as a bestselling children's book author and illustrator began with Lafcadio, the Lion Who Shot Back. He is also the creator of picture books including A Giraffe and a Half, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros?, The Missing Piece, The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, and the perennial favorite The Giving Tree, and of classic poetry collections such as Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, Falling Up, Every Thing On It, Don't Bump the Glump!, and Runny Babbit. And don't miss the other Shel Silverstein ebooks, Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic!

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Excerpt from The Sad Shepherd a Christmas Story He walked looking on the ground, paying small heed to them. Now and again, when the sound of pattering feet and panting breath and the rus tling and rending among the copses fell too far behind, he drew out his shepherd's pipe and blew a strain of music, shrill and plaintive, quavering and lamenting through the hollow night. He waited while the troops of gray and black scuffied and bounded and trotted near to him. Then he dropped the pipe into its place again and strode forward, looking on the ground. Excerpt from Two Years Ago, Vol. 1 It may seem a somewhat Irish method of beginning the story of Two Years Ago by a scene which happened but a month since. And yet, will not the story be on that very account a better type of many a mans own experiences? How few of us had learnt the meaning of "Two years ago" until this late quiet autumn time; and till Christmas, too, with its gaps in the old ring of friendly faces, never to be filled up again on earth, began to teach us somewhat of its lesson. Two years ago, while pestilence was hovering over us and ours, while the battle-roar was ringing in our ears, who had time to think, to ask what all that meant; to seek for the deep lesson which we knew must lie beneath? Two years ago was the time for work: for men to do with all their might whatsoever their hands found to do. But now the storm has lulled once more; the air has cleared awhile, and we can talk calmly over all the wonders of that sudden, strange, and sad "Two years ago." So felt, at least, two friends who went down, just one week before Christmas Day, to Whitbury in Berkshire.
