Excerpt from The Salmon Rivers and Lochs of Scotland In preparing a second edition of this book, I have endeavoured to embody an account of such altered conditions as have come into being since 1909, when the book first appeared. It happens that, especially in the north of Scotland, many rivers have changed hands, for the War has had its influence upon even the peaceful sport of salmon fishing. Some of the changes have not materially altered matters or caused any modification in the fishings; and this is especially the case where tenants of long standing have now become proprietors. But in other instances an entirely new order of things has transpired. The rivers indeed flow on as before, but the anglers, aye and the ghillies one used to know upon the banks, the men who loved these scenes as all true Scotsmen love the land of their fathers, now lie in France or Gallipoli, or in even more distant graves. The records of catches in recent years have not always been easy to obtain, yet have been secured as far as possible. I desire here to thank all those who have so kindly assisted me in this way. Where records up to 1920 have not been available, former catches have been allowed to remain as indicative of angling value. At the same time I have embodied the various notes given me by those who, after reading the book in its earlier form, were good enough to add to or correct former records. Excerpt from The Angler's Companion to the Rivers and Lochs of Scotland But while such are the general features Of Tweed as an angling river, its individual superiority in this respect will be more clearly exemplified, when I limit my Oh servations to the particular portion of its course, which, extending five or six miles upwards, and as many in an opposite direction from Kelso, may be said to lie in the vicinity of that town. In this stretch of water are embraced, unquestionably, some of the finest salmon casts, as far as rod-fishing is concerned, in Great Britain. Spring, summer, autumn, and winter all furnish their fresh-run supply of the scaly tribe. The clean, firm set, eye-delighting fish of March and April is succeeded, during June and July, by the whitlings and early grilses these again, throughout the remainder of the season, are followed by others of older growth intermingled with breeders of every description, while to crown all, the grey-schule, cleaving undauntedly the December torrent, brings up the rear; nor is it until they have escaped the perils of the net and coble, and found their way through the arches of Coldstream-bridge, that these - the migratory fish of Tweed, - discover much appetite for the baits of the angler, or seem inclined to come, right venturesomely, towards his tinselled lures. Here it is, in the stretch of water alluded to, that they most freely exercise their capricious tastes, and here they are found in more abundance and perfection than in the upper portions Of the river. Excerpt from The Angler's Guide to the Rivers Lochs of Scotland From the Christian era to the discovery of printing, there were many works written on the piscatory art; most of them have, however, been lost, or are now mouldering in manuscript in the chief public libraries of France, Italy, Spain, Holland, and other northern countries of Europe. Since the establish ment of printing to the present day, there have not been fewer than from five to six hundred works written on the art, in the several kingdoms of the European Continent; more than one half of the number belonging to the English literature on the subject. Excerpt from The Art of Angling: As Practised in Scotland The very limited number, if not total want, of disserta tions upon the subject of Angling in Scotland, and the necessity for having something like an index to our lochs and streams, have induced us to throw together the fol lowing chapters. In character and produce, our waters differ very essentially from those of England; we have clear and rapid rivers - torrents black with mosses, or pel lucid as diamond - lakes large, and gleaming-tarns deep, still, and terrible, and of these, some are stored with prime, subtle trout, and others are frequented by the active salmon, the monarch of the flood. Excerpt from Fish and Fishing in the Long Glens of Scotland: With a History of the Propagation, Growth, and Metamorphoses of the Salmon It was a warm autumnal day. My friend drove us in his handsome chariot and pair to the scene Of action. From the proprietor Of the estate and of the right to fish we had a hearty welcome, and proceeded at once to the banks Of the stream. TO me the scene was new, although a perusal Of The Complete Angler had to a certain extent prepared me for it. A gently owing, quiet muddy stream, deeply fringed with sedge, and full to the brink, somewhat like a ditch about to over ow, meandered, if you will, through fat, artificially irrigated meadows. The pasture was knee deep, rank and marshy. Clumps of willows studded the landscape; here and there little wooden bridges crossing the deep irrigating canals, relieve the listless ness and monotony Of the scene. On one of these there sat a reverend pastor Of a class Of which Paley was the type. He seemed weighty enough to be an archdeacon. A boy carried his angling apparatus and a seat for him to rest occasionally. He was in accordance With the scenery and the scenery with him. Excerpt from Remarks on the Salmon Fishings of Scotland I have been connected with Salmon Fisheries all my lifetime, my experience in Scotland extending over a period of thirty years, during six of which I have also been an extensive tenant of Irish Salmon Fisheries. Several proprietors of valuable Salmon Fisheries in Scotland suggested to me the propriety of replying to the many statements recently put forth on behalf of the River Fishings. It is with some reluctance I have under taken to do so, as I feel that I am not so competent for the task as a more experienced writer would have been. I trust, how' ever, that my long practical experience as a Salmon Fisher will entitle my remarks to some weight; and, therefore, I have written the following pages in defence of the Sea Fishings, which it is contemplated by the lord-advocate's Bill now before Parlia ment entirely to destroy. While an Act of Parliament was passed so recently as 1842, conferring a right to the holders of'all sea-coast property in Ireland to carry on uninterruptedly What it is now contemplated to crush in Scotland; and while stake-nets have been in use there for 40 years, and bag-nets for 29 years - yet the Irish Fisheries are in a flourishing condition; and, in that period of time, if these fixed nets had produced the injurious effects attributed to them, it is to be presumed that they must have caused a decrease as well in Ireland as it is said they have done in Scotland. Since the following pages were written, I have observed an article in the Times, stating that 50 years ago Salmon were to be had at ]%d per lb. This is an old tradition, nearer 100 years than 50, when there was a scanty population and no means of transit, and before the English rivers had ceased to give a supply of Salmon. The Times should at the same time have informed the public that, at the period when Salmon was lsd per lb, beef was from 2d to 3d per lb, and all other commodities in propor tion; and that money bore a different relation to the price of labour and value of produce than it does now. The Times further states that Salmon have reached such a price as to be beyond the means of people in the middle walks of life. I may state, however, that, by the latest account of sales in London.
