Excerpt from The Sand Test for Determining the Strength of Detonators Forty grams of the sand is weighed on a small pulp balance or other convenient form of scale that will weigh to gram. This sand is poured into the cavity of the bomb, the bomb struck sharply two or three times with a light hammer in order that the sand may be uniformly packed, and the detonator is then carefully inserted so that it rests on top of the sand and in, as nearly as possible, the exact center of the cavity, being held upright in this position by means of its fuse or wires. Sixty grams more of the sand (making a total of 100 grams) is poured around the detonator in the bomb and the bomb tapped with a hammer as before. The proper cover for the bomb is next put in place, the wires or fuse being passed through the holes in the cover without disturbing the position of the detonator or electric detonator in the center of the mass of sand. The bomb is placed Within the clamping device and the cover held tightly in position by screwing down the two hexagonal nuts on the upright iron rods.
