The life expectancy of an American B-17 crew in Europe during World War II was eleven missions, yet crews has to fly twenty-five -and eventually thirty-before they could return home. Against these long odds the bomber crews of the U.S. 8th Air Force, based in England, joined the armada of Allied aircraft that pummeled Germany day after day. Radioman George Webster recounts the terrors they confronted: physical and mental exhaustion, bitter cold at high altitudes, lethal shrapnel from flak, and German fighters darting among bombers like feeding sharks. George Wester was a B-17 radio operator in the 92nd Bomb Group, 8th Air Force. On his twenty-fifth mission in May 1944, his bomber was forced to make an emergency landing in Sweden, where he and his crewmates were interned for the war's duration.

1941. Arcadia, Florida. The US has not yet joined the war, but has agreed to train the British pilots the RAF desperately needs. Rob Stallard, stunned from the loss of both his parents and his grandmother in the London Blitz, is reluctantly learning to fly in the stifling Florida heat. Far from home and his sister, the former farm boy is out of his depth - and furious at the American cadets treating the training so casually while his countrymen are fighting for their lives. He forms an instant and intense dislike of the famous socialite and womaniser, James Theodore Benson III, the son of a captain of industry aiming for a seat in the senate. Meanwhile Jim Benson, under great pressure from his father and the press, finds that flying does not come as naturally to him as it does to a certain taciturn and cold young English farm boy. A savage rivalry develops between the two men, which only intensifies in England, when Benson meets and falls for Stallard's sister, Jenny ... 'The Savage Sky' is a moving tale of love and hate in wartime, following the fortunes of two proud men from different sides of the Atlantic. Elizabeth Darrell previously published it under the pseudonym of Emma Drummond. Praise for Elizabeth Darrell: 'A wonderful story, compellingly told...the authenticity - both emotional and historical - really shines through' - Sarah Harrison Elizabeth Darrell's father was a member of the British Army stationed in Hong Kong, where Drummond spent the early years of her life. As well as writing books, she worked in the Women's Royal Army Corps. Her other titles include 'At the Going Down of the Sun', 'And in the Morning', 'We Will Remember Them' and 'Concerto'. Endeavour Press is the UK's leading independent publisher of digital books.
