"In these essays Richard Wendorf's critical intelligence can be gauged in his analysis of works as diverse as the poetical manuscripts of Alexander Pope, Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up, and Piranesi's early etchings, as well as various typographical and bibliographical issues. But several of these essays also reveal another side of the author as he writes in a more personal (and often humorous) style about collecting, libraries, and librarianship. Both critically and professionally Wendorf is a problem-solver, and readers will relish joining him as he examines the precise relationship between Piranesi's ruins and the etching process or as he persuades a potential donor to present a fabled letter by John Keats to Harvard University."--BOOK JACKET.

Today's research librarian exists within an environment of rapid and unrelenting change. A wide and increasing variety of technological advances are transforming the communication, organization, and storage of information -- and the librarian's traditional function. This work represents the first analytical discussion of the functional role of the research librarian, as well as the relationship between the research librarian, the scholar, and the record of scholarship. Key points include an in-depth, analytical treatment of the future nature of the research library and the future role of the research librarian; fresh appraisals of research library cooperation and the application of technology to research libraries; and a new look at preservation alternatives within the context of the research library's future. Eldred Smith identifies the essential contribution that the research librarian makes to the scholarly process, as well as how and why the librarian has, throughout history, been unable to fulfill the role completely. He explores the scholar's information-seeking practices, and identifies the reasons why these are at odds with the information-organization practices of librarians. Also probed is the conflict that the librarian feels between preservation and the use of research library collections, discussing how this conflict has influenced research library policy and practice. Smith discusses the new electronic information technology as both a threat to the continuation of the research librarian's historical role and as an opportunity to fulfill that role more completely than in the past. Also discussed are the steps that the research librarian needs to take in order to use the new technologies to advantage, including a major redirection of collection preservation activities. The book concludes with a discussion of the main features of the future research library, which provide for a strengthened relationship between the librarian and the scholar, as well as a more productive and substantive contribution by the research librarian to the scholarly process. Research librarians, academic librarians, academic administrators, and scholarly publishers will find a wealth of information in the pages of this book. It will also serve as an ideal adjunct in any course dealing with the future of libraries and librarianship.

Gatekeepers of Knowledge engages in an analysis of those events from a perspective that makes visible the ways in which the production, storage and access of books, have been privileged, while others have been marginalised. Examines its material as analyses of significant events in the development of libraries, books, and scholarship in the western world Embeds those developments in significant political, economic, social and cultural fields of particular eras Ties scholarship to class structures and associated protocols in its treatment of scholarship as the generation of knowledge

Academic Librarianship: Anchoring the Profession in Contribution, Scholarship, and Service is needed now as a response to how much has changed in academic librarianship as a profession (from the smallest academic libraries to large research libraries). Much has been written recently about the status of the profession of librarianship, i.e. whether or not it should still be considered a “profession,” are the same credentials still required/enough, should things change dramatically in SLIS programs in response to the new normal, and what is the impact of hiring PhD’s in disciplines outside of librarianship. Major topics covered include: State of the profession of librarianship today Status of librarians Tenure or not Move away from faculty status in some (more) academic libraries Contributions to the profession -- scholarship What is produced How are librarians conducting research Where is it taking place -- who is producing scholarship Why Trends Contribution to the profession -- service and professional associations LIS Education Tomorrow -- what are the implications for the future of our profession Author Marcy Simons explores the history, current status, and future of the profession of academic librarianship. She clearly demonstrates the need for a shared understanding of how we will work together in order to continue our transformation.
