The purpose was fulfilled through four specific objectives: to identify the causes of single parenting, to identify the challenges faced by single parents on students' academic performance, to propose the solutions to overcome the challenges faced by single parents on students academic performance, to determine the effects of single parenting on students academic performance in secondary schools in Arusha city and to determine the relationship between single parenting factors and students’ academic performance. The study followed survey design whereby quantitative technique was applied. The data were collected through questionnaires using a random sample of 612 respondents. It was found that, single parenting is caused by divorce, death, separation and not married. Also, the study revealed that, challenges faced by single parents on supporting students’ academic performance in secondary schools were inability to buy school requirements, lack of enough time to check students’ exercise books, inability to supply money for lunch to their children, poor communication and lack of time to give homework to children. Also, study laid down that, single parenting challenges can be solved through providing the basic necessities to students as well as encouraging their children to study hard. It was also realized that, single parenting leads to economic hardships among students, lack of support from parents, lack of school resources, life stress and instability and anxiety and depression. The study concluded that, single parenting is caused by divorce, death, separation and not married. Also, the study confirms that, single parenting hinders students’ academic performance in secondary schools. The study recommended that, single parents should buy all school requirements for their children and spend time for academic issues related to their children. The study also recommends that, head teachers should pay more attention to single parenting students and provide counseling to them to encourage them. Also, the government should identify the needs of single parenting students and act accordingly.

One in every four families with children under the age of 18 is a single-parent family (up from 1 of every 10 in 1970). The vast majority of single-parent families are low-income families consisting of a mother (usually with relatively little formal education) and her young children. Many female single heads of households are either displaced homemakers or adolescent mothers. Although they generally have a more healthy economic status than their female counterparts, single fathers are often confronted with serious career-related problems as they find their sole child-rearing role conflicting with work expectations. As the sole support of their families, single parents are concerned with obtaining a good job and achieving economic independence. However, job training and job placement can only be effective in the long run if program developers consider the other needs of single parents: emotional support, job-seeking skills, basic skills instruction, outreach and recruitment, child care, self-concept building, skills assessment, nontraditional job skills, and parenthood education. High school dropout prevention programs are also important for adolescent single parents. Difficulties in locating available resources often prevent single parents from learning of career and other services. Nonwhite and white, rich and poor, born to an unwed mother or weathering divorce, over half of all children in the current generation will live in a single-parent family--and these children simply will not fare as well as their peers who live with both parents. This is the clear and urgent message of this powerful book. Based on four national surveys and drawing on more than a decade of research, Growing Up with a Single Parent sharply demonstrates the connection between family structure and a child's prospects for success. What are the chances that the child of a single parent will graduate from high school, go on to college, find and keep a job? Will she become a teenage mother? Will he be out of school and out of work? These are the questions the authors pursue across the spectrum of race, gender, and class. Children whose parents live apart, the authors find, are twice as likely to drop out of high school as those in two-parent families, one and a half times as likely to be idle in young adulthood, twice as likely to become single parents themselves. This study shows how divorce--particularly an attendant drop in income, parental involvement, and access to community resources--diminishes children's chances for well-being. The authors provide answers to other practical questions that many single parents may ask: Does the gender of the child or the custodial parent affect these outcomes? Does having a stepparent, a grandmother, or a nonmarital partner in the household help or hurt? Do children who stay in the same community after divorce fare better? Their data reveal that some of the advantages often associated with being white are really a function of family structure, and that some of the advantages associated with having educated parents evaporate when those parents separate. In a concluding chapter, McLanahan and Sandefur offer clear recommendations for rethinking our current policies. Single parents are here to stay, and their worsening situation is tearing at the fabric of our society. It is imperative, the authors show, that we shift more of the costs of raising children from mothers to fathers and from parents to society at large. Little is known regarding the involvement levels of single parents in their child's education or what schools can do to support the collaborative involvement with single parents. This is important, because parent involvement is crucial for student success, and schools play an important part in garnering this role towards parent involvement; single parents face unique challenges in becoming involved in their child's education. Based on Joyce Epstein's framework of six different types of parent involvement, single parents of high school children in a Southern California high school district completed surveys (N = 32) and interviews (N = 10) regarding parenting, communicating, volunteering, learning at home, decision-making, and collaborating with the community. Quantitative data were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA and triangulated with the themes from the interview data. The results of this study identified emergent themes that were key to establishing single parent involvement within schools. These themes included: appropriate (a) time and scheduling, having a voice in (b) school governance, some support regarding (c) personal and social well-being within the school, and understanding the use of (d) technology. The findings represented the importance towards fostering greater levels of parent involvement and parent-school collaboration. Furthermore, the overall findings currently highlight the need for collaboration between schools and single parents towards optimizing educational outcomes for children of single parents.

As Korea is expected to see an increase in the share of single-parent families, this study analyzes the impact of a family transition from a two-parent to single-parent home on child development. The level of development is measured based on health, self-regulated learning, emotional disorders, selfperception, life satisfaction, peer attachment, school adjustment, sense of community, and multicultural acceptance. According to the analysis, children who have experienced a transition have difficulties in academic time management but see improvements in their attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders. However, the impact on other development criteria cannot be confirmed. The ability to manage academic time dropped 8.5% while the level of attention and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorders improved 14.4%, compared to the averages. These results are possibly due to the fact that the children are able to have a positive relationship with the primary caregiver after the transition as they are no longer caught in the middle of the parental conflict. This finding indicates that contrary to the conventional belief, transitions can also positively influence child development, and thus, policy intervention is needed to alleviate the negative effects on learning ability. Housework support programs should be expanded to enable single parents to spend sufficient time parenting and, if necessary, receive help in better understanding their parental role. Also, schools should lead efforts to improve nurturing and learning environments by serving as a key link between families and local community. Single parents burdened with household chores cannot invest enough time to establish relationships with their children or gain information about nurturing and education. Programs for such services should stretch to reach single parents struggling with labor, study, disease, and disability. Parent education programs that are specifically customized to fit the needs of single parents should be included in housework support programs if needed to resolve grievances in a timely manner. Teachers should serve as a learning coach and emotional support for the children, and counsellor for the parents while closely monitoring the children's learning stages and family conditions that can affect academic performance. To alleviate the academic difficulties of students, schools should encourage teacher cooperation, promote parent-teacher partnerships, and reinforce parents' capability to provide academic support. They should also take the lead in adopting and driving family support services when a child is in need of help that exceeds the capabilities of the school.
