In this dystopian fantasy from a New York Times–bestselling author, a teen put in quarantine due to a mysterious illness uncovers a government conspiracy. As a lethal plague sweeps through the land, Ani Mells is shocked when she is unexpectedly captured by the governor’s wardens and forced to submit to a test for the deadly Scourge. She is even more surprised when the test results come back positive, and she is sent to Attic Island, a former prison turned refuge—and quarantine colony—for the ill. The Scourge’s victims, Ani now among them, can only expect to live out short, painful lives there. However, Ani quickly discovers that she doesn’t know the whole truth about the Scourge or the Colony. She’s been caught in a devious plot, and, with the help of her best friend, Weevil, Ani means to uncover just what is actually going on. But will she and Weevil survive long enough to do so? The Scourge is an explosively thrilling tale of adventure and intrigue, courage and heart from New York Times bestselling author Jennifer A. Nielsen. “Nielsen’s polished fantasy smoothly combines medieval elements with hints of mystery and romance . . . it delivers a significant message about how misinformation breeds intolerance.” —Publishers Weekly “The characters are well defined and memorable. Feisty Ani, a likable character who is thoughtful and strong, drives the story forward and keeps readers wanting to know more . . . “ —School Library Journal

May 4, 1885- the Feast of Saint Sebastian in Melilli, Sicily, celebrating the martyred saint and protector from the bubonic plague. But for young Nick Ilsanto, that day would turn into his worst nightmare, its tragedy propagating a new kind of plague, one spawned by avarice and hate, destined to bring America, and Europe, to its knees. Nick Ilsanto and the Scourge of the Black Hand details Nick’s twentyfour- year odyssey to find the man known as “il Lupo,” “the Wolf,” the cause of his nightmare and, eventually, the world’s. While pursuing the leader of the terrorist organization known as the Black Hand, Nick, driven by revenge, vows to destroy both “il Lupo” and the Hand- why the Wolf wants him, more than anyone else on earth, dead. A crime novel and love story featuring some of America’s most legendary figures, including P.T. Barnum, Teddy Roosevelt, and John L. Sullivan, “Nick Ilsanto” is also an epic tale of America’s reality and myths regarding justice, equality, racism and immigration.

Inherent in mans nature is the question of our origin. Many believe that there is something inside of us that compels us to rise above the other species that we live with and have come to term this condition the human soul. It is said to be the piece of us that goes in once life ceases, but does it really exist? Is virtue truly the salt of mankinds character? Or are people simply another creature in love with their notions of a higher order and ideals that they are unfit to achieve? Finally with faith being uncertain, is there cause to live a good life and how do we satisfy this compulsion? This book is a composition of over one hundred poems that ask the questions; does virtue end before humanity can begin? Do people being people undo this very virtue as they deal with the shades of themselves? It will look introspectively at modern society and in poetic prose depict the destruction of a man who attempted to embody honor, respect, and chivalry, morals that seem irrelevant in his time and to his culture. Is he noble? Finally does he earn what he searches for in life or does it change as his time goes on?

Wrestling With God And Men written by Steven Greenberg and has been published by Univ of Wisconsin Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004-02-23 with Religion categories.

For millennia, two biblical verses have been understood to condemn sex between men as an act so abhorrent that it is punishable by death. Traditionally Orthodox Jews, believing the scripture to be the word of God, have rejected homosexuality in accordance with this interpretation. In 1999, Rabbi Steven Greenberg challenged this tradition when he became the first Orthodox rabbi ever to openly declare his homosexuality. Wrestling with God and Men is the product of Rabbi Greenberg’s ten-year struggle to reconcile his two warring identities. In this compelling and groundbreaking work, Greenberg challenges long held assumptions of scriptural interpretation and religious identity as he marks a path that is both responsible to human realities and deeply committed to God and Torah. Employing traditional rabbinic resources, Greenberg presents readers with surprising biblical interpretations of the creation story, the love of David and Jonathan, the destruction of Sodom, and the condemning verses of Leviticus. But Greenberg goes beyond the question of whether homosexuality is biblically acceptable to ask how such relationships can be sacred. In so doing, he draws on a wide array of nonscriptural texts to introduce readers to occasions of same-sex love in Talmudic narratives, medieval Jewish poetry and prose, and traditional Jewish case law literature. Ultimately, Greenberg argues that Orthodox communities must open up debate, dialogue, and discussion—precisely the foundation upon which Jewish law rests—to truly deal with the issue of homosexual love. This book will appeal not only to members of the Orthodox faith but to all religious people struggling to resolve their belief in the scriptures with a desire to make their communities more open and accepting to gay and lesbian members. 2005 Finalist for the Lambda Literary Awards, for Religion/Spirituality
