Excerpt from The Scriptural Relation of Children to the Church of Christ Thou art my God from before the birth. If by breach of law through the first Adam sin passed over on the children of our race, by so much more does grace pass over on them by the second Adam to sai vation and justification of life. And as sin passed over on our children unconditionally and without free choice on their part, so does the merit of the atone ment them unconditionally to salvation through the second Adam, the Lord Jesus Christ. The very existence of childhood, and, by consequence, of the race, is due to the atonement of Jesus Christ. It isonly necessary, without tracing the connection, to assert that, as the Apostle most distinctly amrms, sin became a curse to the whole of mankind by the transgression of the first man of our race. But Paul, also, asserts that the saving benefits of the atonement of Jesus Christ are as broad as the ruin wrought. If original sinfulness of nature affects the infants of our race, much more the saving benefits of salvation pass over to the infants of the race. See Romans 5: 12-21 for the argument of the Apostle on this question. Such also are the resurrection privi leges broadly stated by Paul to belong to humanity, and by consequence to the infants of our race who may have passed away out of this life in the early morning of their existence here. Every institution of the Church must have some funda mental reasons for its existence, otherwise it is en titled to oblivion. While the literature on the corre lated doctrine is exceeding voluminous, there is no serious attempt, with, perhaps, one or two exceptions, to reduce to a. System the various facts which consti tute the doctrine underlying the practice of those Churches who include children within their folds. There is, therefore, a real demand for a work of this nature. That this work now presented to the Church will answer the requirement, is not the province of the writer to decide. It has been prompted solely by' the desire to advance within, the interests of the Re deemer's kingdom. That it will be acceptable to all, is not expected. It certainly will not be to those who maintain an unreasonable adherence to the fabricated technicalities of theological terminology, nor to those who antagonize the conservative-progressive method of the best thought of the present. Excerpt from The Moral Status of Children and Their Relation to Christ and His Church Those who adopt the third view hold that while children, as such, are fallen by nature, they are all redeemed by Christ; that the benefits of this re demption are co-extensive with the results of the fall - the blessing co-extensive with the curse; that through the atonement the guilt of original sin is so put away that no one is damned on account of it; that, therefore, every child born into this world is to be regarded, not only as fallen in Adam, but as redeemed by Christ - a partaker of the free gift which came upon all men unto justification of life. The conclu sion is that children, as such, in virtue of the atone ment, belong to Christ, and are heirs of the kingdom of heaven; and that this privilege and relationship can be forfeited only by their own wilful rejection of Christ, his salvation, and his service. Objections to this view will be considered in the proper place. The question now is, Which of these views is in harmony with the teaching of God's Word, and with the facts of human experience?
