Long neglected by scholars, the Dead Sea scrolls rewriting Samuel-Kings shed precious light on the ancient Jewish interpretation of these books. This volume brings all these texts together for the first time under one cover. Improved editions of the fragments, up-to-date commentary, and detailed discussions of the exegetical traditions embedded in these scrolls will be of interest to both scholars and students of Second Temple Jewish literature.

The history of modern biblical interpretation is checkered with attempts to rethink and resituate readers theologically and ethically. At least two tendencies emerge in these remedial proposals, both of which animate this project: (1) many accounts privilege either divine action (theology) or human, ecclesial response (ethics); (2) few proposals have availed themselves of the potential hermeneutical resources of a more extensive biblical theology. This study offers a theological and ethical account of Christian readers of Scripture--one that brings together these two apparently divergent poles--through the deployment of a biblical theological motif: royal priesthood. The designation of the people of God as a royal priesthood, conditioned and informed by the offices of king and priest, carries with it themes that frame the hermeneutical situation in such a way that accounts well for the integral relation of divine agency and ecclesial response, theology and ethics.

The Hebrew scriptures, called Tanakh or simply Bible by Jews and the Old Testament by Christians, contain the original sources of western religious traditions. This book describes their growth beginning with the traditions that grew up among Israelite tribes in Canaan and the Israelite and Judean monarchies that followed. Part I treats the formation of oral rituals and traditions which came to be the contents of the written books. Part II deals with the formation of the literature contained in the Hebrew Scriptures. Part III describes the development of the canons of Hebrew and Greek scriptures.

Before the Scrolls argues that books of the Bible were not originally books or even single continuous book-scrolls. Instead, important works of the Hebrew Bible were originally archives or libraries that later scribes rendered onto single volume book-scrolls. By tracing the material history of the prophetic books of the Hebrew Bible, Before the Scrolls gives a detailed insight into these processes and demonstrates how profoundly the transcription of archives into books transformed the biblical literature.

This extract from the Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible provides Tomes’ introduction to and concise commentary on First and Second Kings. The Eerdmans Commentary on the Bible presents, in nontechnical language, the best of modern scholarship on each book of the Bible, including the Apocrypha. Reader-friendly commentary complements succinct summaries of each section of the text and will be valuable to scholars, students, and general readers. Rather than attempt a verse-by-verse analysis, these volumes work from larger sense units, highlighting the place of each passage within the overarching biblical story. Commentators focus on the genre of each text—parable, prophetic oracle, legal code, and so on—interpreting within the historical and literary context. The volumes also address major issues within each biblical book—including the range of possible interpretations—and refer readers to the best resources for further discussions.

A fortieth anniversary is an occasion to be marked under any circumstances, especially when it concerns a discovery as significant as that of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The proper way to mark this occasion was to organize a symposium that would be as comprehensive as possible, both in content and in variety of approaches, and which would be held in the land of the Scrolls. The papers here reflect not only the variety and richness of subjects treated by contemporary research on Qumran, but also its international character. Since the study of texts remains the first task of the Qumran scholar many of the collection's papers belong to its first section — Texts and Text Studies. The other six sections are: The History of the Qumran Community, Halakha at Qumran, Qumran and the Hebrew Bible, Qumran and the New Testament and The Hebrew of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
