In the decades since its initial publication in German in 1978, Polychrome Sculpture has come to be widely regarded as a watershed text on the making and meaning of European medieval and Baroque painted wood sculpture. An early proponent of interdisciplinary research, Johannes Taubert played a pioneering role in combining the rigorous scientific analysis of materials with a fuller understanding of form and function, an approach that has led to the development of technical art history as practiced today. Many of the essays in this volume apply such scientific techniques as microscopic analysis to an art-historical understanding of Romanesque and late Gothic wood sculpture, revealing that, far from serving a merely decorative function, the painted surface of these works was intricately connected to their meaning. The paint layers on the sculptures, for example, which the author spent years documenting through close examination and analysis, were intended to impart a heightened sense of reality to the life-sized sculptures, thereby enhancing the viewer’s experience of worship. Taubert believed it was crucial for conservators to understand this context before undertaking any treatments. No other book offers such a focused, subtle, and interdisciplinary examination of the subject as Polychrome Sculpture. This influential work is now available in English for the first time, in a meticulous translation enhanced and updated by new color illustrations, annotations to the original text, and a new introduction.

He was one of the most prolific and versatile sculptors of the transition period between late Gothic and Renaissance, a master in stone and limewood. Tilman Riemenschneider was born between 1445 and 1462 in Heiligenstadt im Eichsfeld in the German province of Thuringia. When Riemenschneider was about five years old, his father lost his possessions and had to leave Heiligenstadt due to his involvement in a violent political conflict, the Mainzer Stiftsfehde. The family resettled in Osterode, where Tilman's father became Master of the Mint (A good position at that time) and where Riemenschneider spent his childhood years. Riemenshchneider is said to have come to Wurzburg for the first time at the age of 18, his Uncle served as notary and financial advisor to the Bishop there, but he did not stay for long at that time. Around 1473 Riemenschneider learned the trade of sculpting and woodcarving throughout the areas of Swabia and the upper Rhine - possibly in Strasbourg and Ulm. At that time the statutes of the guild of sculptors required that an apprentice travel to many different workshops to gain experience. Very little is known about this period of his life but it is likely that he came in contact with the work of Martin Schongauer, whose copper...

Veit Stoss (ca. 1438/1447-1533), a contemporary of Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), was one of the most prominent limewood sculptors of the late fifteenth-early sixteenth century in Central Europe. Stoss worked in Nuremberg for a majority of his career, commissioned by its leading patrician families to make various pieces of limewood sculpture for the city's churches. His work in Nuremberg was interrupted by a nearly twenty-year stay in Krakow, Poland, from 1477 until 1496, where he undertook two monumental sculptural projects that remain his earliest extant works today, the multi-winged altarpiece of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary (1477-1489) done in limewood and the red marble tomb effigy for King Casimir IV Jagiellon (1492). Previous scholarship on Stoss has focused on the commission of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, but has ignored the importance of this work both within the artist's large artistic development and within the already existing tradition of wood sculpture in late-fifteenth-century Poland. What is more, many twentieth-century German and Polish art historians have mobilized Stoss's career anachronistically within modern nationalist frameworks to support their own political agendas, choosing to ignore the cosmopolitanism of Krakow's mixed population and the dynamic hybrid nature of his works' iconography and artistic style. This thesis seeks to move beyond the limiting and distorting lens of earlier nationalist agendas with the aim to restore Stoss to his historical context as an artist who borrowed stylistically from painting, prints, and sculpture, and who met the demands of diverse patrons, both in Germany and in Poland, by creating a dynamic hybridity of styles, local and foreign.
