"Juan Ponce de Leon officially discovered the Sea Shell Islands, Sanibel and Captiva, in 1513 when he turned landward on the Gulf Coast of Florida and sailed south 'as far as some islands that make out to sea.' An abundant food supply attracted Indians before the Age of Discovery and their gold, gleaned from shipwrecks, brought the Spanish conquistadores, Slavers, pirates, marauding Seminoles -- all were part of the colorful, often tempestuous, history of these islands, now famous for sea shells. Mrs. Dormer's descriptions are informative and always lively, whether she's discussing and re-creating the accidental discovery of Sanibel and Captiva, making conjectures about a possible earlier visit by Amerigo Vespucci, or delving into the personal histories of some of the first permanent settlers on the two tiny isles. She makes it clear why such personages as Thomas A. Edison, Theodore Roosevelt and Edna St. Vincent Millay were drawn there as well. the present also is very real in The Sea Shell Islands as Islanders fight to keep the charms of another era against the almost insurmountable odds of explosive growth."--Publisher's description.

This is the third and final installment of the Sea Shell Island series. This trilogy is a continuation of a romantic fantasy; about an island in Ireland; over seen by fairies and by mortal caretakers that live on the island where ancient sea shells come to die. Although the island is threatened continually by modern day pirates; Megan and Nate struggle to assist the fairies in protecting the ancient sea shells and their magical secrets; while raising a family. In this book they become in involved in many adventures; discovering new mythical creatures, finding secrets, helping others, and numerous changes surrounding them constantly. This is the most exciting of all three books and will be loved by all ages. This trilogy has been a fun project. I wanted to write some books where I could give my 18 grand kids a legacy and honor them. I wanted a subject that my grandkids would love and fairies were my choice; and to include them in the books. I hope you enjoy the trilogy. Please also check out my autobiography; "3, 000,452 ways I survived my life" and my children's educational books about whale - "Whale tales.""

The Empty Seashell explores what it is like to live in a world where cannibal witches are undeniably real, yet too ephemeral and contradictory to be an object of belief. In a book based on more than three years of fieldwork between 1991 and 2011, Nils Bubandt argues that cannibal witches for people in the coastal, and predominantly Christian, community of Buli in the Indonesian province of North Maluku are both corporeally real and fundamentally unknowable. Witches (known as gua in the Buli language or as suanggi in regional Malay) appear to be ordinary humans but sometimes, especially at night, they take other forms and attack people in order to kill them and eat their livers. They are seemingly everywhere and nowhere at the same time. The reality of gua, therefore, can never be pinned down. The title of the book comes from the empty nautilus shells that regularly drift ashore around Buli village. Convention has it that if you find a live nautilus, you are a gua. Like the empty shells, witchcraft always seems to recede from experience. Bubandt begins the book by recounting his own confusion and frustration in coming to terms with the contradictory and inaccessible nature of witchcraft realities in Buli. A detailed ethnography of the encompassing inaccessibility of Buli witchcraft leads him to the conclusion that much of the anthropological literature, which views witchcraft as a system of beliefs with genuine explanatory power, is off the mark. Witchcraft for the Buli people doesn't explain anything. In fact, it does the opposite: it confuses, obfuscates, and frustrates. Drawing upon Jacques Derrida's concept of aporia—an interminable experience that remains continuously in doubt—Bubandt suggests the need to take seriously people’s experiential and epistemological doubts about witchcraft, and outlines, by extension, a novel way of thinking about witchcraft and its relation to modernity.

Pirates Revenge is the second of the Sea Shell Island trilogy; an exciting combination of romance and fantasy, based in Southern Ireland. ..".Later that day, while Megan was pulling a cake out of the oven; Nate stepped in the door. He took of his cap and hung it on the peg. As he looked at her in surprise; he saw her standing in the kitchen with a cake pan in her mitt covered hands, flour on her cheeks and little wisps of hair hanging down over one eye. He tried to hide his grin as he questioned her, "whut ye doin' Lass? Da fairies can whip up a cake wit magic. Why ye be goin' ta the truble?" She tipped the pan upside down and flipped the cake onto the wire cooling rack. She swiped her disheveled hair with the back of her hand and regarded him with a puzzled look, and then replied, "I just want to give something of myself, as they do so much for us, Nate. Anyway, why do you go fishing and hunting when their magic can provide all of our food? Hmm?" And why do you build and invent?" She commented with a sly grin, knowing she had him, she went on. "Some people would give their souls to live as we do, where we do; and I don't ever want to take that for granted."

Seashell or sea shells are the hard exoskeleton of mollusks such as snails, clams, chitons. For most people, acquaintance with mollusks began with empty shells. These shells often delight the eye with a variety of shapes and colors. Conchology studies the mollusk shells and this science dates back to the 17th century. However, modern science - malacology is the study of mollusks as whole organisms. Today more and more people are interacting with the ocean - divers, snorkelers, beachgoers - all of them often find in the seas not empty shells but live mollusks - living shells, whose appearance is significantly different from museum specimens. This book serves as a tool for identifying such animals. The book covers the region from the Red Sea to Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, and Guam. Inside the book: • Photographs of 1500+ species, including one hundred cowries (Cypraeidae) and more than one hundred twenty allied cowries (Ovulidae) of the region; • Live photo of hundreds of species have never before appeared in field guides or popular books; • 2600 full-color images; • Convenient pictorial guide at the beginning and index at the end of the book. It is designed for divers, underwater photographers, snorkelers, shell collectors, beachcombers, and nature lovers. Photographs, showing color variations are included. The validity of species names was checked with the help of the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS).
