The facts before us remain sufficiently curious to invite further elucidation. But whatever may be the final explanation, the seal before us, taken in connection with the charter to which it is attached, must ever remain a striking and curious illustration of some of the principal facts of the history of that time bringing vividly before us the disorganised condition of France, as a result of several distinct causes, viz. The war between two rival kings for its sovereignty the government by a Regent on behalf of a minor and absentee king; the further confusion caused by the enforced absence of the Regent himself, when sorely needed at his post, in consequence of fatal disunion in England itself; and the extraordinary power and prestige, which this combination of causes augmented, of the great feudatory prince, the Duke of Burgundy.
