ABSTRACT: The Large Hadron Collider is pushing high energy physics in to a brand new territory. This extraordinary era may bring discoveries of unprecedented magnitude, delivering validation or extreme dissappointment to the physics theories of the previous decades. By colliding particles at more than 3.5 times the center of mass energy of the Tevatron accelerator at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory, the CERN Large Hadron Collider aims to produce particles in the mass range above those that are already known. At the same time, there are exciting possibilities for new physics in the low-mass range that may have gone unnoticed until now. An example of this is a GeV-scale dark sector with a colorful spectrum of new particles. This physics model produces unique signatures of collimated leptons at the Large Hadron Collider energies. In the first part of this work, we describe the interesting astrophysical evidence that motivates a search for lepton jets and focus our attention on a minimal supersymmetric standard model with a GeV-scale dark sector that produces this exciting signature. In the next part of the thesis, we describe a search using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector for evidence of dark matter in events containing muonic lepton-jets produced in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We employ a novel lepton jet algorithm and find no evidence of an excess of such events with respect to the rate predicted by the Standard Model and interpret the null result in terms of a recently developed supersymmetric theory of dark matter. In doing so, we severely constrain the theoretical model and its parameters with the actual data from the Large Hadron Collider. In addition, we report the first observation of double J/Psi production, a new physical process discovery at the next energy frontier.

This thesis describes in detail a search for weakly interacting massive particles as possible dark matter candidates, making use of so-called mono-jet events. It includes a detailed description of the run-1 system, important operational challenges, and the upgrade for run-2. The nature of dark matter, which accounts for roughly 25% of the energy-matter content of the universe, is one of the biggest open questions in fundamental science. The analysis is based on the full set of proton-proton collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at √s = 8 TeV. Special attention is given to the experimental challenges and analysis techniques, as well as the overall scientific context beyond particle physics. The results complement those of non-collider experiments and yield some of the strongest exclusion bounds on parameters of dark matter models by the end of the Large Hadron Collider run-1. Details of the upgrade of the ATLAS Central Trigger for run-2 are also included.

"This dissertation presents a novel search for new physics using the full Run 2 dataset of 137.6 fb-1 collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid during proton-proton runs of the Large Hadron Collider. The new physics in question is dark matter production in a unique signature called semi-visible jets. Semi-visible jets are produced when a new massive mediator particle emerges from the proton-proton interaction. This mediator then decays to unstable dark matter particles which hadronize and produce a mixture of standard model particles and stable dark matter particles. The stable dark particles are only detectable as missing transverse momentum, and the standard particles are detectable as jets. This produces a signature where two jets are produced, one of which is aligned with the total missing transverse momentum. The search is presented in two phases: a classical cut-based search which uses a series of cuts based on event kinematics to select events which look like the signal signature, and a machine learning based search which uses a technique called boosted decision trees to identify semi-visible jets in a more powerful but model-dependent way. No evidence for Physics Beyond the Standard Model is observed in either search. The classical search excludes the possibility that the mediator could have a mass between 1.5 TeV and 3.98 TeV, while the model-dependent search excludes mediators with masses between 1.5 TeV and 5.08 TeV. Additionally, ranges of other signal parameters are excluded"--Page viii.

This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.

A search for dark matter has been performed using the monotop model, with the dark matter signature in the form of large missing energy, presence of a b-tagged jet and an isolated lepton (electron and muon). The data analyzed in this analysis was collected from 2016-2018 amounting to an integrated luminosity of 137 $fb^{-1}$ from the proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy ($\sqrt{s}$) of 13 TeV and upper exclusion limits on the mass of the dark matter mediator and the dark matter particle have been set at 95\% confidence level.

Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses 20.3 fb-1 of \(\sqrt{s{\mathrm{}}} = 8\) TeV data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Events are required to have at least one jet with pT>120 GeV and no leptons. Nine signal regions are considered with increasing missing transverse momentum requirements between EmissT>150 GeV and EmissT>700 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model expectations. The results are translated into exclusion limits on models with either large extra spatial dimensions, pair production of weakly interacting dark matter candidates, or production of very light gravitinos in a gauge-mediated supersymmetric model. Limits on the production of an invisibly decaying Higgs-like boson leading to similar topologies in the final state are presented.

We present the results of a search for dark matter production in the monojet signature. We analyze a sample of Tevatron pp collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 6.7 fb−1 recorded by the CDF II detector. In events with large missing transverse energy and one energetic jet, we find good agreement between the standard model prediction and the observed data. We set 90% confidence level upper limits on the dark matter production rate. The limits are translated into bounds on nucleon-dark matter scattering rates which are competitive with current direct detection bounds on spin-independent interaction below a dark matter candidate mass of 5 GeV/c2, and on spin-dependent interactions up to masses of 200 GeV/c2.

A search for dark matter particles is performed using events with large missing transverse momentum, at least one energetic jet, and no leptons, in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 12.9 inverse-femtobarns. The search includes events with jets from the hadronic decays of a W or Z boson. The data are found to be in agreement with the predicted background contributions from standard model processes. The results are presented in terms of simplified models in which dark matter particles are produced through interactions involving a vector, axial-vector, scalar, or pseudoscalar mediator. Vector and axial-vector mediator particles with masses up to 1.95 TeV, and scalar and pseudoscalar mediator particles with masses up to 100 and 430 GeV respectively, are excluded at 95% confidence level. The results are also interpreted in terms of the invisible decays of the Higgs boson, yielding an observed (expected) 95% confidence level upper limit of 0.44 (0.56) on the corresponding branching fraction. The results of this search provide the strongest constraints on the dark matter pair production cross section through vector and axial-vector mediators at a particle collider. When compared to the direct detection experiments, the limits obtained from this search provide stronger constraints for dark matter masses less than 5, 9, and 550 GeV, assuming vector, scalar, and axial-vector mediators, respectively. The search yields stronger constraints for dark matter masses less than 200 GeV, assuming a pseudoscalar mediator, when compared to the indirect detection results from Fermi-LAT.

In this paper, a search for physics beyond the Standard Model, in final states with at least one high transverse momentum charged lepton (electron or muon) and two additional high transverse momentum leptons or jets, is performed using 3.2 fb-1 of proton–proton collision data recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in 2015 at √s=13 TeV. The upper end of the distribution of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of leptons and jets is sensitive to the production of high-mass objects. No excess of events beyond Standard Model predictions is observed. Finally, exclusion limits are set for models of microscopic black holes with two to six extra dimensions.

Abstract: The Standard Model (SM) is the only model in particle physics containing all observed elementary particles and their interactions. Over the years, its predictions were tested and observed in a number of experiments. However, there are still observations that can not be explained by the SM with one of the most prominent ones being the existence of Dark Matter (DM). While the existence of DM was first theorised through astronomical observations, extensions of the SM allow for a search of DM at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as well. Since DM can not be detected directly, final states analysing its existence at the LHC are always designed around high missing transverse energy. This thesis presents a search for DM with data collected by the ATLAS detector in the years 2015-2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ at a center of mass energy of 13~\TeV. The analysis is based on an extended two Higgs doublet model (2HDM+a) where a pseudo-scalar mediator allows the production of DM in the final state. In addition to the DM, a top quark and a \Wboson-boson are produced in the final state. This thesis mainly focuses on a final state with zero leptons which results in both the \Wboson-boson and the top quark being required to decay hadronically. In addition to that, the \Wboson-boson can be expected to have a high momentum in the signal process. Therefore, a dedicated identification algorithm using large-radius jets is employed to select events with at least one hadronically decaying \Wboson-boson. This allows for a strong distinction against SM background events. In this analysis, several different signal processes are considered, since different parameters can affect the cross section and the distributions of the signal processes. These parameters include different values for the mass of the mediator $a$, the mass of the heavy Higgs boson $H$ and $\tan\beta$. Since no significant excess was found in the signal regions when comparing SM prediction to data, upper exclusion limits on the cross section of the signal processes were calculated with a 95\% confidence level (CL). These limits are presented in three different model parameter planes. One such plane presents the upper limits for different values of the mass of the mediator, $m_a$, and the mass of the heavy Higgs boson, $m_H$, while keeping $\tan\beta = 1$. The second and third plane present the upper limits for different values of the mass of the heavy Higgs boson, $m_H$, and $\tan\beta$ while the mass of the mediator $a$ stays constant at $m_a = 250~\GeV$ and $m_a = 150~\GeV$. In addition to the upper limits for signal processes with one top quark in the final state, this thesis also provides an upper exclusion limit where this signal process is combined with a process that includes two top quarks in the final state
