This book provides the reader with a detailed and captivating account of the story where, for the first time, physicists ventured into proposing a new force of nature beyond the four known ones - the electromagnetic, weak and strong forces, and gravitation - based entirely on the reanalysis of existing experimental data. Back in 1986, Ephraim Fischbach, Sam Aronson, Carrick Talmadge and their collaborators proposed a modification of Newton’s Law of universal gravitation. Underlying this proposal were three tantalizing pieces of evidence: 1) an energy dependence of the CP (particle-antiparticle and reflection symmetry) parameters, 2) differences between the measurements of G, the universal gravitational constant, in laboratories and in mineshafts, and 3) a reanalysis of the Eötvos experiment, which had previously been used to show that the gravitational mass of an object and its inertia mass were equal to approximately one part in a billion. The reanalysis revealed that, contrary to Galileo’s position, the force of gravity was in fact very slightly different for different substances. The resulting Fifth Force hypothesis included this composition dependence and also added a small distance dependence to the inverse-square gravitational force. Over the next four years numerous experiments were performed to test the hypothesis. By 1990 there was overwhelming evidence that the Fifth Force, as initially proposed, did not exist. This book discusses how the Fifth Force hypothesis came to be proposed and how it went on to become a showcase of discovery, pursuit and justification in modern physics, prior to its demise. In this new and significantly expanded edition, the material from the first edition is complemented by two essays, one containing Fischbach’s personal reminiscences of the proposal, and a second on the ongoing history and impact of the Fifth Force hypothesis from 1990 to the present.

An article in the January 8, 1986 issue of The New York Times dramatically announced, "Hints of Fifth Force in Nature Challenge Galileo's Findings". Just four years later, many of those who had worked on the concept concluded that "the Fifth Force is dead". Reading like a detective story, The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force discloses the curious history of the quick advance and swift demise of the "Fifth Force" - a proposed modification of Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation and one of the most publicized physics hypotheses in recent memory. While discussing the origin and fate of this short-lived concept, The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force delivers a fascinating analysis of the ways in which scientific hypotheses in general are promulgated and pursued. What leads to the formulation of a hypothesis? How and why does a hypothesis become considered worthy of further investigation? These are some of the questions that The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force pursues while unraveling the dynamics of this scientific search. Taking aim at the "social constructivist" view of science, which posits social and professional interests as the primary engine behind hypothesis-making, Allan Franklin proposes an "evidence model" of science. He emphasizes the crucial role that experimental evidence plays in the discovery, pursuit, and justification of scientific proposals and suggests a distinction between the reasons for scientific pursuit and the reasons used to justify hypotheses. Buttressing Franklin's model, The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force provides a unique comparison of the published record and the private e-mail correspondence of the three major authors of the Fifth Force hypothesis duringthe first six months following the publication of their proposal. A fascinating inquiry into a scientific hypothesis and the forces that first advanced and then rejected it, The Rise and Fall of the Fifth Force is an outstanding account for physicists, historians and philosophers of science, and all readers interested in what makes science tick.

Four forces create all realities but what crafts humanity’s worst criminalized-depraved-brutal actualities? Fifth Force hypothesis seeks to decipher ‘mystical code’ that plays out harmonious-melodious probabilities; supplanting them over discordant-cacophonous propensities in human world, lives. It revisits fundamentals of life-living; especially relationships, to install lasting bliss, fruition. Fifth Force premise journeys beyond populist perceptions of good-bad, right-wrong, success, morality, even meanings and experiences; to unravel probability of a ‘Cosmic Causality’, pervading and embedded in consciousness as well as in building blocks of reality, which installs and sustains aesthetics and homeostatic synergy in emergent realities. It diagnoses pathologies; seeks code of vitality. This eBook delves into the spectrum of reality, in a novel and alternative way; as facilitated by modern contemporary scientific knowledge of the mechanisms and processes of all realities. The Fifth Force metaphor attempts to deliberate on the cosmic construct of the criminality-depravity-hypocrisy-deception-shamelessness-brutality-insanity of contemporary humanity and in turn discover the missing element and dimension, which have potentials of nobility-amiability-mutuality-magnanimity-sincerity-fraternity. It also inquires the processes of emergence of realities within human body-brain mechanism as well as in external milieus of society-cultures, to ascertain where and how realities get aligned to discord-cacophony, instead of harmony-melody. This Fifth Force enterprise is aimed at bringing to deliberation the reality that since ages, we all have been used to accepting meanings in a definitive way and restricted to some experiences, dominant in popular cultures and it is high time we revisit them and accept novel and alternative dimensions about them. We must revisit the earliest landscapes of brains as well as consciousness to unravel true and unadulterated feel of experiences, as they engender in brain states, representing meanings, through metaphors. We must revisit all meanings; which we take for granted and seldom think about their true nature. We must revisit critical ideas and feels of morality, aesthetics, melody, harmony, poise, emotions, righteousness, et al. This revisiting is a two-way process – first we need to unlearn this age-old and innate subconscious habit of accepting populist and intuitive meanings and experiences and secondly; we must then learn and accept a novel and alternative meanings and experiential realities, as propounded and enunciated by modern science. It is a humble and simple hypothesis that probably contemporary humanity is in such calamitous shape and spirit because of our old, archaic, obsolete and partial perceptions about life-living realities, realities of Self and Reality of the cosmos as a whole. That is why I continue to write about probable novel and alternative meanings and experiences, so that you embark on this new journey, which contemporary science beckons you to. This is the road to neo-spiritualism as knowledge is true divinity. This is the definitive journey towards the optimization of your true potentials. All meanings as well as experiences in life-living must always align to potential optimization. Thanks. Welcome.

A history of the attempts to test the predictions of Newtonian Gravity, describing in detail recent experimental efforts to verify both the inverse-square law and the Equivalence Principle. Interest in these questions has increased in recent years, as it has become recognised that deviations from Newtonian gravity could be a signal for a new fundamental force in nature. This is the first book devoted entirely to this subject, and will thus be useful to both graduate students and researchers interested in this field. It describes the ideas that underlie searches for such deviations, focusing on macroscopic tests. A comprehensive bibliography of some 450 entries supplements the text.
