In Search Of The Primitive written by Stanley Diamond and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-06-21 with Social Science categories.
Anthropology is a kind of debate between human possibilities—a dialectical movement between the anthropologist as a modern man and the primitive peoples he studies. In Search of the Primitive is a tough-minded book containing chapters ranging from encounters in the field to essays on the nature of law, schizophrenia and civilization, and the evolution of the work of Claude Lévi-Strauss. Above all it is reflective and self-critical, critical of the discipline of anthropology and of the civilization that produced that discipline. Diamond views the anthropologist who refuses to become a searching critic of his own civilizations as not merely irresponsible, but a tool of Western civilization. He rejects the associations which have been made in the ideology of our civilization, consciously or unconsciously, between Western dominance and progress, imperialism and evolution, evolution and progress.

This is an invaluable book that presents the original work published in French, in 1904, by Henry Leon Lebesgue, the creator of the theory of integration. Translated into English for the first time, the book offers readers a unique opportunity to explore Lebesgue’s groundbreaking ideas and delves into the mind of one of the greatest mathematicians in history. The book provides historical context and explanations that enhance readers’ comprehension and appreciation of the material. Covering a wide range of topics, from the integration before Riemann to the search for primitive functions, it offers a comprehensive understanding of Lebesgue’s theories and their significance in the field of mathematics. It inspires readers to explore further in the field, stimulates new ideas, and opens avenues for future research. The book bridges the gap between theory and practice by providing examples and applications that contributed to the development of Lebesgue integration theory. The book serves as a valuable resource for courses in analysis, measure theory, and Lebesgue integration theory, providing students with the opportunity to study the original work of Lebesgue and deepen their understanding of integration theory. It is meant for a broad audience, including advanced undergraduate and graduate students, mathematics scholars, researchers, educators, and enthusiasts, seeking a comprehensive understanding of Lebesgue’s theories and the historical development of integration theory. Mathematicians and researchers will find this book essential for its historical significance and the preservation of important mathematical literature.

The Scientific Reinterpretation Of Form written by Norma Emerton and has been published by Cornell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-06-30 with Science categories.
A noteworthy study in the history of ideas, this is the first systematic account of an idea that was born with the concept of science itself in ancient Greece and that has been vital to its evolution ever since. The book traces the development of the concept of form—one of the most important and persistent elements in natural philosophy—from its origins in Plato and Aristotle to the beginnings of the nineteenth century. Norma Emerton depicts the transformation of the form concept as it was transferred from a philosophical to a scientific context, and she explains how it was reinterpreted and used especially in particle theory, chemical doctrine, and crystallography in the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries. Throughout she emphasizes the philosophical, linguistic, and theological context of scientific theories, supporting her argument with evidence from a wide variety of primary sources, some of them little known, and many of them specially translated by the author. In form and style her book treats the history of a "unit-idea " in the grand tradition of A. 0. Lovejoy's Great Chain of Being. ''The story is a fascinating one,'' writes L. Pearce Williams in the Foreword. "This is 'internal' history of science which illustrates well the fact that scientific ideas have lives of their own worth investigating, describing, and analyzing. The result is a history that introduces one of the most important and central concerns of modern science." The Scientific Reinterpretation of Form will be of particular interest to historians and philosophers of science, intellectual historians, and others concerned with the dynamic interaction between philosophy, theology, and science.

Legal primitivism was a complex phenomenon that combined the study of early European legal traditions with studies of the legal customs of indigenous peoples. Lawyers and Savages: Ancient History and Legal Realism in the Making of Legal Anthropology explores the rise and fall of legal primitivism, and its connection to the colonial encounter. Through examples such as blood feuds, communalism, ordeals, ritual formalism and polygamy, this book traces the intellectual revolution of legal anthropology and demonstrates how this scholarship had a clear impact in legitimating the colonial experience. Detailing how legal realism drew on anthropology in order to help counter the hypothetical constructs of legal formalism, this book also shows how, despite their explicit rejection, the central themes of primitive law continue to influence current ideas – about indigenous legal systems, but also of the place and role of law in development. Written in an engaging style and rich in examples from history and literature, this book will be invaluable to those with interests in legal realism, legal history or legal anthropology.

The Protection Of Minorities And Human Rights written by Yoram Dinstein and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-27 with Law categories.
From the dawn of modern international law, manifold treaties (especially peace treaties) have recognized the rights of specific minorities in specific territories. Today -- with Eastern Europe once more in turmoil and with minority groups all over the world clamouring for recognition -- there is a growing awareness that, irrespective of the observance of the fundamental freedoms of individuals, minority groups have their legitimate interests that must be appreciated and accommodated. This collection of essays grew out of an international legal colloquium, held at the Faculty of Law of Tel Aviv University in March 1990. Some of the papers have already been published in volume 20 of the Israel Yearbook on Human Rights, but others are printed here for the first time. The authors come from different parts of the world and represent different legal backgrounds. They are by no means at one in their analysis of the human rights of minority groups, but they all share the sense that problems of minorities cannot be brushed aside or glossed over. It is not too hazardous to forecast that these problems will actually intensify in the 21st century. Whereas they cannot be solved through exclusively legal means, international and constitutional lawyers must do their utmost to identify flash points and to offer at least some prescriptive guidelines. This is the principal purpose of the present volume.
