Competent managers with strong leadership skills are scarce (Cafolla, 2008). According to Goleman (2001), EQ might predict up to 90% of the variance in leadership effectiveness by uncovering strong positive effects of leadership commitment and effectiveness that support strong influences on leadership effectiveness. This modified Delphi study extended research on the emotional intelligence competencies to explore future possibilities of improving leadership success at mid- to high-level management tiers. The results of this study provide evidence to support emotional intelligence and leadership potential, validating the need for EQ as a leadership strategy. The Delphi study results recommended training to increase EQ in leaders and asserted that leaders with high levels of EQ are likely to improve overall organizational results, reduce turnover, reduce fraud and low performance, improve moral, and make organizations a better place to work.

In recent years, the construct of emotional intelligence has gained much attention as a potential underlying attribute of effective leadership. Still, there are many viewpoints regarding the relationship (if any) between emotional intelligence and leadership effectiveness. The purpose of this doctoral study was to investigate the said relationship and explore further whether or not emotional intelligence dimensions, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management, could predict the perceived level of leadership effectiveness. Quantitative survey data was obtained between 2013 and 2014 from 91 senior managers and over 1,000 employees in a large investor-owned utility company in the United States. The findings suggested that leaders' emotional intelligence, as measured by the self-assessed Emotional Intelligence Appraisal (EIA) questionnaires, has no significant relationship with the perceived level of leadership effectiveness, as measured by the 360-degree Leadership Assessment Program (LAP) surveys. The research also showed that four emotional intelligence dimensions, as predictors, are not conclusive indicators of leadership effectiveness ratings, the desired leadership outcome.

The study explores the role of emotional intelligence in community college leaders using a case study design with mixed-methods, including quantitative and qualitative data. Twenty-one leaders among three cases participated in the study, each completing the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test (MSCEIT) and participating in semi-structured interviews about how leaders use emotional intelligence to accomplish their work. Each case represents a single comprehensive community college in Washington or Oregon. Leaders included presidents, vice presidents, deans, and directors. The study addresses three research questions, including: How do community college leaders use emotional intelligence in their administrative duties? How does emotional intelligence shape organizational management and fulfillment of organizational objectives? What role does emotional intelligence have in leadership during challenging times? Findings identified several factors related to emotional intelligence and community college leaders. First, leaders often lacked knowledge of how they use emotional intelligence. Second, leaders with the highest emotional intelligence focused more on the teams and culture of the institution. Third, presidents were high in Strategic Area Ability on the MSCEIT instrument, suggesting presidents have a strong ability to understand and regulate emotions. Recommendations for future research include an exploration of the relationship between introvert/extrovert personality traits and emotional intelligence; further study on leadership effectiveness and emotional intelligence; and the impact of emotional intelligence among governing boards on community college leaders.

According to management and psychology courses, as well as legions of consultants in organizational psychology, shared vision in dyads, teams and organizations can fill us with hope and inspire new possibilities, or delude us into following false prophets. However, few research studies have empirically examined the impact of shared vision on key organizational outcomes such as leadership effectiveness, employee engagement, organizational citizenship, coaching and organizational change. As a result, the field of organizational psychology has not yet established a causal pattern of whether, if, and how shared vision helps dyads, teams and organizations function more effectively. The lack of empirical work around shared vision is surprising given its long-standing history in the literature. Bennis and Nanus (1982) showed that distinctive leaders managed attention through vision. The practitioner literature has long proclaimed that vision is a key to change, while Conger and Kanungo (1998) discussed its link to charismatic leadership. Around the same time, positive psychology appeared in the forms of Appreciative Inquiry (Cooperrider, Sorensen, Whitney, & Yaeger, 2000) and Positive Organizational Scholarship (Cameron, Dutton, & Quinn, 2003). In this context, a shared vision or dream became a legitimate antecedent to sustainable change. But again, empirical measurement has been elusive. More recently, shared vision has been the focus of a number of dissertations and quantitative studies building on Intentional Change Theory (ICT) (Boyatzis, 2008) at dyad, team and organization levels of social systems. These studies are beginning to lay the foundations for a systematic body of empirical knowledge about the role of shared vision in an organizational context. For example, we now know that shared vision can activate neural networks that arouse endocrine systems and allow a person to consider the possibilities of a better future (Jack, Boyatzis, Leckie, Passarelli & Khawaja, 2013). Additionally, Boyatzis & Akrivou (2006) have discussed the role of a shared vision as the result of a well-developed set of factors that produce a desired image of the future. Outside of the organizational context, positive visioning has been known to help guide future behavior in sports psychology (Loehr & Schwartz, 2003), medical treatment (Roffe, Schmidt, & Ernst, 2005), musical performance (Meister, Krings, Foltys, Boroojerdi, Muller, Topper, & Thron, 2004), and academic performance (Curry, Snyder, Cook, Ruby, & Rehm, 1997).
