The practice of medicine in the days before the development of anaesthetics could often be a brutal and painful experience. Many procedures, especially those involving surgery, must have proved almost as distressing to the doctor as to the patient. Yet in order to cure, the medical practitioner was often required to inflict pain and the patient to endure it. Some level of detachment has always been required of the doctor and especially, of the surgeon. It is the construction of this detachment, or dispassion, in early modern England, with which this work is concerned. The book explores the idea of medical dispassion and shows how practitioners developed the intellectual, verbal and manual skill of being able to replace passion with equanimity and distance. As the skill of 'dispassion' became more widespread it was both enthusiastically promoted and vehemently attacked by scientific and literary writers throughout the early modern period. To explain why the practice was so controversial and aroused such furor, this study takes into account not only patterns of medical education and clinical practice but wider debates concerning social, philosophical and religious ideas.

Restoring Respect For Justice written by Martin Wright and has been published by Waterside Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Law categories.

This book records a symposium where imaginary presenters consisting of a politician, judge, psychologist, probation officer, victim assistance worker, philosopher and mediator discuss crime and punishment. This is the springboard for a review of developments in the field of restorative justice, challenging many 'sacred cows' of crime and punishment and focusing on the people who suffer directly, the victims. A key theme is that if society as a whole does not encourage respect then it ought to be no surprise that offenders have scant regard for the property, physical integrity or rights of other people. The system itself can serve to weaken rather than improve safety and security. The book points to the dangers of a punitive mind-set and reflects on the arguments and data in favour of an effective, inclusionary, community-based response to crime.

The highly accessible Sensation and Perception presents a current and accurate account of modern sensation and perception from both a cognitive and neurocognitive perspective. To show students the relevance of the material to their everyday lives and future careers, authors Bennett L. Schwartz and John H. Krantz connect concepts to real-world applications, such as driving cars, playing sports, and evaluating risk in the military. Interactive Sensation Laboratory Exercises (ISLE) provide simulations of experiments and neurological processes to engage readers with the phenomena covered in the text and give them a deeper understanding of key concepts. The Second Edition includes a revamped version of the In Depth feature from the previous edition in new Exploration sections that invite readers to learn more about exciting developments in the field. Additionally, new Ponder Further sections prompt students to practice their critical thinking skills with chapter topics.
