Excerpt from The Sentimental Calendar: Being Twelve Funny Stories It was the Major that gave them the name, and the stories are serious; that is, I mean them seriously: nor are they the less serious for being short; or, at least, it seems to me they are not. I think we are all too ready by three-fifths to look upon short stories with a certain contempt, as we do upon short men. Poe was the first man to see otherwise, particularly with reference to poems: but then Poe was a horrid man, most unexemplary; and sense, while susceptible of gradual absorption, is not exactly catching. It seems to me this is wrong. I think - will the reader gently allow me to drop the "it seems," and "I think," and other cowardly pseudo-politenesses, and say what I have to say bluntly, not forgetting (nor shall 1) that it is all only what I think, and what it seems to me, nor calling me presumptuous for plumping out with what little the Lord has put in my head to say? For a man's lies come home to roost, and his nonsense is pricked in the telling; and there are prigs enough in the world already, as my Dutch cousin will tell you.
