The Sermon on the Mount, one of the most influential portions of the Bible, is the most studied and commented upon portion of the Christian Scriptures. Every Christian generation turns to it for insight and guidance. In this volume, a recognized expert on the Gospels shows that the Sermon on the Mount offers a clear window into understanding God's work in Christ. Jonathan Pennington provides a historical, theological, and literary commentary on the Sermon and explains how this text offers insight into God's plan for human flourishing. As Pennington explores the literary dimensions and theological themes of this famous passage, he situates the Sermon in dialogue with the Jewish and Greek virtue traditions and the philosophical-theological question of human flourishing. He also relates the Sermon's theological themes to contemporary issues such as ethics, philosophy, and economics.

In the 5th, 6th, and 7th chapters of the Gospel according to Matthew are recorded the words of Christ as He presented them to the multitudes in the message we now call '"The Sermon on the Mount." Beginning with the beloved Beatitudes, and closing with instructions on "how to pray," this marvelous Sermon contains practical teachings on how Christians ought to conduct themselves. The Sermon closes with an inspiring glimpse into what glories await the Christian beyond the grave. All those who know and tlove the work of Charles Haddon Spurgeon will agree that no preacher could make this Sermon live for the reader with more God-given eloquence than could the "Prince of Preachers.'' In this series of messages on the Beatitudes and other great Truths of the Gospel delivered by Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, Spurgeon is at his best! Every one of these messages is full to overflowing with the inspiration and fire which characterized Spurgeon's unusual ministry--a ministry which began many years ago and is still continuing in this modern day.

Christians have always turned to the Sermon on the Mount for inspiration. In Life Can Begin Again, Helmut Thielicke, himself one of the great preachers of the 20th Century, comes to grips with what is often seen as a collection of lovely, but impossible ideals. Thielicke makes it clear that the Sermon on the Mount can never be understood if, even for a moment, we forget the person of the Preacher of the Sermon. For without the person and the work of Jesus Christ, the marvellous words of the Beatitudes and the injunctions that follow them are the most radical and devastating distillation of God's claims that can be conceived; they leave us in utter, hopeless dismay. Only 'in Christ' do these words of the law become the glorious gospel that promises a new life. Here is not only great preaching on some of the most urgent and sublime themes, but great tenderness and compassion too. As in so many of his works, Thielicke brings the profundities of Biblical religion alive for the modern era.

The Sermon on the Mount is perhaps the most famous passage in the Gospel of Matthew. Even unbelievers like Mahatma Gandhi appreciate the teaching of the Sermon and applaud the high morality it espouses. Others see in statements like Òlove your enemies and Òturn the other cheek a powerful rhetoric against war and violence. Most Christians are familiar with the Sermon, and see it as delineating important ethical principles for Christian living. Familiarity with the Sermon, however, can ironically prevent Christians from understanding its true message and significance. Some, for instance, see the Sermon merely as a body of Òethical teachings that has some practical relevance. Many find some of its imperatives too idealistic. In this book, Chia asks basic questions as he reflects on the Sermon on the Mount: What is the main focus of the Sermon? Does the Sermon present a code of conduct for Christians, or is the Sermon really about the dawn of a new eschatological community inaugurated by Jesus Christ? Chia maintains that the Sermon can be properly understood and its significance firmly grasped only when it is read in the light of Christ and God's eschatological kingdom. The Sermon presents the attitude, values, and conduct of the new community that Christ has gathered in his name. But this new reality that has dawned awaits fulfillment at the consummation of the kingdom of God. In the ambivalence of the Òalready and Ònot yet, the Sermon depicts Christian discipleship as an Òimpossible possibility. Yet, the Sermon clearly challenges Christ's disciples to be a community of character and to embody an ethic which is inimical to that of the world.

Setting Words On Fire written by Paul Scott Wilson and has been published by Abingdon Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-01 with Religion categories.

In the second half of the twentieth century, a profound shift took place in how we think about preaching. We moved away from a vertical focus on the preacher who hands down the authoritative teaching, to more relational, narrative, and conversational models. Yet common to both of these understandings, says Paul Scott Wilson, is the idea that preaching is primarily about teaching, that it mainly conveys information about God.Important as this emphasis on “preaching as teaching” has been, Wilson believes that the time for a new approach has arrived. That new approach, which he names “preaching as proclamation,” has begun to arise from a variety of Euro-American and African American sources. Its primary aim is not to convey information, but to engender an encounter with God’s grace in Christ. More than guiding people to say “Yes, now I understand,” it hopes to lead them to proclaim “I am redeemed; we are saved.” More than telling the gospel story, it renders the gospel’s claim on human lives, leading to conviction of sin, repentance, and transformation. Pulling together the disparate strands of this new homiletical school, Wilson constructs a comprehensive introduction to preaching, focusing on its character as proclamation of the sovereign grace of God.
