Discover ancient civilizations that have disappeared beneath the ocean's surface and explore how the science of submergence adds to our knowledge of human history. The traces of much of human history – and that which preceded it – lie beneath the ocean surface; broken up, dispersed, often buried and always mysterious. This is fertile ground for speculation, even myth-making, but also a topic on which geologists and climatologists have increasingly focused in recent decades. We now know enough to tell the true story of some of the continents and islands that have disappeared throughout Earth's history, to explain how and why such things happened, and to unravel the effects of submergence on the rise and fall of human civilizations. In Worlds in Shadow Patrick Nunn sifts the facts from the fiction, using the most up-to-date research to work out which submerged places may have actually existed versus those that probably only exist in myth. He looks at the descriptions of recently drowned lands that have been well documented, those that are plausible, and those that almost certainly didn't exist. Going even further back, Patrick examines the presence of more ancient lands, submerged beneath the waves in a time that even the longest-reaching folk memory can't touch. Such places may have played important roles in human evolution, but can only be reconstructed through careful geological detective work. Exploring how lands become submerged, whether from sea-level changes, tectonic changes, gravity collapse, giant waves or volcanoes, helps us determine why, when and where land may disappear in the future, and what might be done to prevent it.

Existence has a billion faces, each one an universe coexisting with our own. In one such universe, a man named Rafe has learned to walk between the worlds. Rafe can walk through the shadows of the worlds. Anything that he can imagine, he can find in the worlds that might be. During his wandering, he has met other Walkers. Some of these have been called gods by our ancestors. Odin, Zeus, or Enlil, Brahma or Kali, all of these awoke to the truth of infinite worlds, and learned to travel among the worlds with purpose. The world lines encompass all possibilities and all possible worlds. There are an infinite number of worlds in which humans, and some who are nearly human, live. Beyond these worlds are the ones that twist the mind into madness, worlds where the rules are not the familiar ones that we expect. Far from the places of humanity, there are places where, in all the universe, there are no places to stand, where even the stars have never formed, and some in which the hydrogen that fills our universe can never be. Far beyond these worlds are places so incomprehensible that the eye refuses to see there, and the ear cannot hear there, places that are beyond madness, where the mind dissolves with the merest experience. In this place which is neither dark nor light, where no rationality or order is possible, there are things that live beyond time and space, things that hunger for all things. The Scourge is from this darkest place, and it slowly intrudes into the shadows of order, bringing madness to both Man and world. It falls to the Walkers in Shadows to unite, and to seal the way against the Scourge, before the stain of the Scourge's touch can twist all worlds everywhere into madness.

This anthology represents the first sustained feminist examination of eighteenth-and nineteenth-century German women writers in English. These essays highlight the literature produced by German women in the period 1790-1810, framing the discussions with a comparative orientation. The book analyzes in culturally specific detail how these authors came to constitute the first generation of writing women in Germany at a time when Goethe set the standard for literary production. Each essay focuses on the ambivalence of the author(s) toward literary and social models. The authors treated include Rahel Varnhagen, Charlotte von Stein, Friederike Helene Unger, Bettine von Arnim, Caroline Schlegel-Schelling, Sophie Albrecht, Therese Huber, Sophie Mereau, Sophie von La Roche, Henriette Frolich, and Benedikte Naubert.

Today’s interest in social history and private life is often seen as a twentieth-century innovation. Most often Lucien Febvre and the Annales school in France are credited with making social history a widely accepted way for historians to approach the past. In Lost Worlds historian Jonathan Dewald shows that we need to look back further in time, into the nineteenth century, when numerous French intellectuals developed many of the key concepts that historians employ today. According to Dewald, we need to view Febvre and other Annales historians as participants in an ongoing cultural debate over the shape and meanings of French history, rather than as inventors of new topics of study. He closely examines the work of Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve, Hippolyte Taine, the antiquarian Alfred Franklin, Febvre himself, the twentieth-century historian Philippe Ariès, and several others. A final chapter compares specifically French approaches to social history with those of German historians between 1930 and 1970. Through such close readings Dewald looks beyond programmatic statements of historians’ intentions to reveal how history was actually practiced during these years. A bold work of intellectual history, Lost Worlds sheds much-needed light on how contemporary ideas about the historian’s task came into being. Understanding this larger context enables us to appreciate the ideological functions performed by historical writing through the twentieth century.

“In each of us, there is another whom we do not know”. The shadow is the dark side of the subconscious, where this ‘other’ resides. It’s where we’ve imprisoned our demons – where they amass inconceivable power. Unearthing and mending with the shadow is a delicate, gradual process. But sometimes all it takes is one brutally jarring experience, coupled with a reckless dose of hard drugs and booze, to plunge you straight towards the darkest pits of your psyche. THIS ISSUE: DOUBLE-SIZE DEBUT. Kenji kicks off his 24th birthday by ingesting an experimental blend of psychotropic compounds he dubs the “Molotov cocktail of psychedelics”. But the ensuing lewd and quirky trip turns dark when Kenji finds himself in a crazy hellish landscape – left to confront an all too familiar demon. Meanwhile his brother Renji, with the help of two rogue yakuza thugs, kidnaps the head of a rival clan in a fatal attempt to cripple and ultimately dispose of the infamously sadistic yakuza boss known simply as, the “Barracuda”. And thus the stage is set for the Eat the Shadow series.
