A tale of tragedy and triumph with twists, turns, and surprises, creating an emotional tension taking a young writer, Janene, on a journey with another famous writer, Sofia, whose humble beginnings in post WWI Germany as the daughter of a poor baker to her present mansion in Pittsburgh reveal a connection between the two. The scenes portray history as time capsules from the tumultuous events of the 20th Century. The reader travels from the jungles of Vietnam to the soldiers who had fought at the Front in WWI, the streets of Hitler's Berlin, and to an immigrant woman raising a mixed race child in America. Although the outcomes are predictable because of historical documentation, they propel the plot forward in a chronological order, keeping the reader engaged in the lives of the characters. As Sofia takes Janene on a journey through time and the distance of three continents, the readers eavesdrop on her story, revealing characters that seem real, making the fiction seem as if it is a true story. Despite her age of eighty-nine years and ill health, Sofia is an excellent storyteller. She inspires Janene to write her own story detailing her quest to find her roots. Sofia has lived her life and is facing death trying to come to terms with her own heritage. Her story focuses on the one item that she values most in her vast estate, her one, and only legacy from her German family, a tattered heirloom quilt made by her beloved grandmother, 'Oma Frieda'. The quilt takes on a life of its own, becoming the voice of Frieda. The stories Sofia shares about it over her lifetime are instrumental in helping both Sofia and Janene come to terms with the mysteries of their heritages. Oma Frieda had taught a young Sofia to love her God and family, and to make her country proud as she had told little Sofia stories about family members, all the while stroking the fibers of her patchwork quilt that she had made from their discarded items of clothing. Sofia had loved the stories of her ancestors and had promised her beloved Oma Frieda that she would grow up and make her country proud of her. However, after her experience as the wife of a Nazi in an arranged marriage, Sofia had denounced all ties to Germany after the Third Reich had shattered her life, taking away everyone and everything she had ever loved. Unlike Sofia, Janene had never known anything about her roots, not even the exact date of her birth in Vietnam. Fast forward to 2008 when the novel opens, Sofia is now facing death, trying to decide how to dispose of that old thread worn quilt which, to her, represents everything good about being German, the country that she had denounced. Before she had granted the interview to Janene, she had decided to have the old quilt buried with her but, after meeting Janene, Sofia decides to embrace her heritage again. Her life passes before her as she shares it with Janene. She bases her change of heart on a new belief that the past, no matter how horrible, should never be buried and never be forgotten. She promises Janene that she will help her find her Vietnamese family. A story within a story, the characters stay with the reader long after the last page. The novel has a surprise ending.

This is the author's current edition of her debut novel, SHATTERED SEEDS: "SOFIA'S STORY, self-published for the first time 20 March 2011 at createspace.com. She retired the novel in each of its previous editions except the one included as the first volume in her new collection of stories about immigrants to the America during various times in history, which she titled ANEW, THE SCATTERED SEEDS. Although born on different continents and at different times in the 20th Century, the two main characters in SOFIA'S STORY, THE SHATTERED SEEDS have a commonality - both are writers and both are immigrants to America. The novel opens in 2008. Thirty-something Janene McDeenon, a writer/editor of a magazine in Atlanta, is traveling to Pittsburgh to interview a famous writer, Sofia Blackburn-Anderson (pen named 'Sophie Simon') for an article on "Adoption in America" that she is writing for a magazine. Sofia established the largest chain of worldwide adoption centers for needy children, W.O.O.Q (World Organization of Quilts) and Janene found her during her research on the internet. Orphaned in infancy in S. Vietnam and adopted by a loving American couple in 1972, Janene is the mixed race daughter of a Vietnamese woman and an African American soldier. She hopes the current assignment will also help in her personal search to find her biological family, especially her Vietnamese mother. Raised in Atlanta, she had little contact with others of her race. On the other hand, Sofia was born in Berlin in 1919 and raised with the many traditions of her German family. Once married to a Nazi Officer in an arranged marriage, she ran away from her evil husband in 1944, a flight that shattered her life, taking away everyone and everything she ever loved. Consequently, she denounced all ties to her heritage, vowing never again to acknowledge that she was a German. Strangers, Sofia sets the tone for Janene's interview by reciting one story after another about her life, including the fact that she believes that Janene is actually her long lost granddaughter. Janene doesn't know what to believe, but as she listens to Sofia recite stories as if she is reading them from a script, she forms a bond that transpires Time and the distance of three continents. Sofia asks Janene to be her guest at her mansion and the meeting becomes a weekend of marathon story telling in which Janene also shares hopes and aspirations for the future, including finding her Vietnamese mother. Sofia promises to help Janene in her search. In ill health and facing death, Sofia secretly hopes to find the proper disposition for the one item in her vast estate she values most, her beloved Oma's quilt. The quilt is her only relic of her German heritage and, after many years of denying it, she wants to put her affairs in order before she dies and embrace her German roots one last time. A story within a story, Sofia tells about her tragic but triumphant life, sharing tales about her German family, farmers outside of Berlin who became homeless after losing fields due to the economic conditions in Germany after their loss of WWI. Although Janene knows nothing about her Vietnamese ancestors, the plot eventually reveals that Janene's maternal ancestors were also farmers in the rice paddies of Vietnam until the Viet Cong destroyed the village. This explains the author's selection of the title, comparing the process of prematurely 'shattering' the seeds of plants to destroying the genes of another generation of humans through the practices of war. If heirloom seeds are shattered before planting, they will never grow. In the 20th Century, Biographical Fiction, SHATTERED SEEDS: "SOFIA'S STORY", CLU Gallagher draws a unique comparison to the seeds of humanity. Sofia is a German woman whose life had been destroyed by war. Now, she is eighty-nine years old and facing death, worried about how she should dispose of the one article in her vast estate she values most, a tattered old quilt, a legacy from her grandmother. She is haunted by a decision she'd made to her beloved Oma to make Germany proud of her, a task that proved difficult after she'd run away from the evils of her Nazi husband and had denounced all connection to Germany. Beginning anew in America and in a world that despised Germans, she overcame her tragic past by becoming a published author and utilized her wealth to establish a chain of adoption centers. The story opens with Janene McDeenon (An-Ly Tai) traveling to Pittsburgh for a meeting with Sofia. Janene is writing an article for a women's magazine on “Adoption", but is hoping to find information about her own adoption in the process. The two women form a bond that transcends time and distance as they both explore the answers to the mysteries of their heritage. Before the meeting with Janene, Sofia had willed that the last remaining relic of her shattered German family (her Oma's quilt) be buried with her. After the meeting, Janene gains a new appreciation for the loss she'd suffered when war in South Vietnam had taken away her heritage. Clu Gallagher has given the readers a compelling account of war in the 20th Century and its lasting effects on those who had endured it. It is difficult to believe that the story is fiction.
