Excerpt from The Shaw Bulletin, Vol. 4: Catalogue Number 1934-1935, Announcements for 1935-1936 Shaw University was founded in December 1865 when a theologi cal class was formed in the old Guion Hotel situated where the State Museum now stands. This class was formed by Dr. Henry Martin Tupper who was honorably discharged from the Union army after serving for three years as a private and as a chaplain. On October 10, 1865, Doctor Tupper settled in Raleigh with his bride, Mrs. Sarah B. Tupper, and in December organized the class which was to develop into Shaw University. Shortly after the formation -of the theological class, Dr. Tupper saw the need Of expansion of his activities. With $500 which he had saved while in the army, he purchased a lot at the corner of Blount and Cabarrus Streets and there erected a two-storied wooden structure. With the help Of a few faithful followers, he constructed this building from timber prepared from trees that they themselves had felled in the forests. The Raleigh Institute, as it was called, was one Of the largest strue tures of its kind in the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Shaw And Other Matters written by Stanley Weintraub and has been published by Susquehanna University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with Drama categories.

Demonstrating the influence of scholar-teacher Stanley Weintraub on his students, Shaw and Other Matters reflects the scope of that influence in its concern with a variety of literary figures - from Shaw to Joe Orton - and of topics such as war memoirs and golem/robots. The variety is there, as well, in the approaches to the subjects: Rodelle Weintraub's dream analysis of Arms and the Man; Julie Sparks's comparison of Shaw with Bellamy, Morris, and Bulwer-Lytton as world "betterers"; Michael Pharand's evaluation of Shaw's changing views of Napoleon; Kinley Roby's tracing of Shaw's exchanges of views on playwriting with Arnold Bennett; and Kay Li's archetypal exploration of characters in Heartbreak House.
