In the South Pacific there is a remote isolated tropical island whose beaches are totally made out of shells. Everyday, and especially during storms, thousands of shells are washed in onto the sand and collected by a family who live on the edge of the beach. For years Tom's parents have been collecting shells and making them into elaborate jewellery and hanging ornaments. This is the story of the baby (Thomas) brought up on the beach who through constant contact with the beach managed to develop an unusual capability of incorporating shells into the skin on his back. This had never been recorded before and no one else on the island had this ability. As he grew up he became well known and respected and when people had problems they would go and see the shell man for advice. This phenomenon led to him leaving the island but returning years later to find that shell island was no longer the peaceful home that he knew so well.

THE SHELLMAN STORY is the story of a Pastor and his Church locked in battle over the racial issue in the early fifties of the twentieth century because the Supreme Court had said black children could go to school with white children in Shellman Georgia, and the Pastor of the Shellman Baptist Church said it was the right thing to do. But the people of that little Church in that little town said they would not allow their Pastor to say such a thing because it was contradictory to their hallowed traditions. The Pastor insisted on preaching this new teaching, so they fired him, after the hanging in effigy did not convince him that he was wrong about what he believed was right. But there was a Remnant of the Church who stood by their Pastor and the Remnant is the true Glory of the Church. Here in THE SHELLMAN STORY Henry Buchanan has told how it all happened fifty years ago. But because it seemed so strange to the people who heard him and saw it all happen in Shellman Georgia, Buchanan has included some tales from his boyhood which show how the boy who grew up in a racially stratified home and community became the man would challenge the Southern Tradition of his own people, and be hanged in effigy for it, and in the end be fired by the Church he served as God's spokesman in a time of great crisis and turmoil because he believed he was Right.

For the Foi people who live on the edge of the central highlands of Papua New Guinea, the flow of pearl shells is the "heart" of their social life. The pearl shell is the exchange item that mediates the creation of their most important sexual and social roles. The Heart of the Pearl Shell analyzes a number of myths of the Foi people, elegantly bringing together significant ethnographic materials in a way that has important implications for the development of social theory in anthropology and in Melanesian studies. Scholars of semiotic-symbolic anthropology and of comparative religion will also share the author's interest in the meaning and role of mythology in Foi culture. Instead of relying on orthodox methods of Freudian or structuralist interpretation, James Weiner assumes there is a dialectical relationship between the images of Foi myth and the images of the Foi's social world. He demonstrates how each set of these images is dependent upon the other for its creation. This innovative study locates Foi social meaning in the re-creation and attempted solution of the moral dilemmas that are crystallized in mythology and other poetic usages.
