Flying Cloud written by David W. Shaw and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-10-13 with Travel categories.

Flying Cloud is the riveting and thoroughly researched tale of a truly unforgettable sea voyage during the days of the California gold rush. In 1851, navigator Eleanor Creesy set sail on the maiden voyage of the clipper ship Flying Cloud, traveling from New York to San Francisco in only 89 days. This swift passage set a world record that went unbroken for more than a century. Upon arrival in San Francisco, Flying Cloud became an enduring symbol of a young nation's daring frontier spirit. Illustrated with original maps and charts as well as historical photographs, Shaw's compelling narrative captures the drama of this thrilling adventure. In a position almost unheard of for a woman in the mid-19th century, Eleanor Creesy served as the ship's navigator. With only the sun, planets, and stars to guide her, she brought Flying Cloud safely around Cape Horn at the height of a winter blizzard, faced storms, dodged shoals, and found her way through calms to make the swift passage possible. Along with her husband, Josiah, the ship's captain, she sailed the mighty 3-masted clipper through 16,000 miles of the fiercest, most unpredictable oceans in the world. Shaw vividly recreates 19th-century seafaring conditions and customs, for both the crew and the passengers who entrusted their fate to an untested ship. Including excerpts from letters and diaries of passengers, Shaw recounts Flying Cloud's victory in the face of adversity—including sabotage, insubordination, and severe damage to the clipper's mainmast that might have sunk her with all hands lost. But the ship triumphed and would ultimately sail the world. Flying Cloud brings to life, for the first time, the glory of one of America's most important seafaring tales and one woman's incredible achievements.

Can home be a place you’ve never been, a place no one has ever been? The White Cloud is the most audacious experiment the human species has ever undertaken—to search for a new Earth. The ship and its crew exist for a solitary purpose—to reach a distant planet and establish a colony. However, the vast majority of people undertaking this journey will not live to see its result, nor were they part of the decision-making process to leave. A novel-in-stories, following the many generations who make the journey, The Voyage of the White Cloud asks how you can find meaning as a slave to destiny, a mere stepping-stone in history. These are the stories of the most ordinary people on a most extraordinary journey. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 28.0px 0.0px; line-height: 22.0px; font: 18.0px Times; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000; background-color: #ffffff} span.s1 {font-kerning: none}

Ship Track Clouds Aerosol And Ship Dynamic Effects A Climate Perspective From Ship Based Measurements written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998 with categories.

Ship-track clouds are marine boundary layer clouds that form behind ocean ships and are observed from satellites in the visible and near infrared. Ship-track clouds provide a rare opportunity to connect aerosol cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) emissions and observable changes in marine stratiform clouds. A very small change in the reflectivity of these eastern Pacific and Atlantic clouds (about 4%) provides a climate feedback of similar magnitude to doubling CO2 (increasing cloud reflectivity corresponds to global cooling). The Department of Energy sponsored research from 1991 to 1995 to study ship-track clouds including two ocean-based experiments in the summers of 1991 and 1994. These experiments showed that ship-track cloud properties were often more complex those related to a reduction of droplet size with an increase in number associated with increasing CCN from the ship's plume. The clouds showed evidence of morphological changes more likely to be associated with cloud dynamic effects either initiated by the increased CCN or directly by the ship's heat output or turbulent air wake. The fact that marine stratiform clouds, that are susceptible to ship track formation, are starved for both CCN and convective turbulence complicates the separation of the two effects.

CLOUD ATLAS, David Mitchell's bestselling Man Booker Prize-shortlisted novel which was also one of Richard & Judy's 100 Books of the Decade, has now been adapted for film. In this enhanced edition you can read the original novel along with a new essay by David Mitchell about the transformation of his novel into a film, and watch four exclusive videos about the book and film. The major motion picture, directed by Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Andy Wachowski, stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Jim Broadbent Hugo Weaving, Doona Bae, James D'Arcy, Zhou Xun, Keith David and Hugh Grant. The novel features six characters in interlocking stories, each interrupting the one before it: a reluctant voyager crossing the Pacific in 1850; a disinherited composer blagging a precarious livelihood in between-the-wars Belgium; a high-minded journalist in Governor Reagan's California; a vanity publisher fleeing his gangland creditors; a genetically modified dinery server on death-row; and Zachry, a young Pacific islander witnessing the nightfall of science and civilisation. The narrators of CLOUD ATLAS hear each other's echoes down the corridor of history and their destinies are changed in ways great and small. Mitchell's other novels are GHOSTWRITTEN, NUMBER9DREAM, BLACK SWAN GREEN and A THOUSAND AUTUMS OF JACOB DE ZOET, all published by Sceptre. www.sceptrebooks.com Facebook: Sceptre Books Twitter: SceptreBooks

Ship Track Cloud Analysis For The North Pacific Area written by Steven E. Morehead and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988 with categories.

Anomalous cloud lines produced by stack exhaust from ships in the North Pacific Ocean basin are analyzed. These cloud lines or 'ship tracks' are observed most clearly in the channel 3 near-infrared satellite imagery obtained from the NOAA-9 AVHRR sensor. The ship tracks are produced as hot exhaust gases are expelled into the atmosphere creating an aerosol concentration higher than background areas. These aerosols serve as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and cause a shift in the cloud droplet distribution to a higher concentration of smaller droplets. Channel 3 AVHRR data are sensitive to cloud droplet size and show these ship tracks as an increase in radiance. An existing ship track detection algorithm is examined and improvements are developed and evaluated. The existing algorithm works well in areas with uniform cloud cover which contain well defined ship track cloud lines. However, it begins to break down in areas with no ship tracks, cloud free areas and regions of transition from one cloud regime to another. An improved algorithm is developed which is able to improve the analysis in these problem areas. Comparison of this algorithm with the original algorithm shows a twofold increase in the percentage of valid ship tracks detected. Neither algorithm is capable of fully representing all the ship track pixels in given image but the feasibility of this type of analysis is clearly shown. The detection algorithm is also adapted to evaluate large scale areas of data as a precursor to the development of a ship track cloud climatology for the North Pacific Ocean. While computer processing time becomes a limitation, some ability is shown for the analysis of large scale areas. (FR).
