Two novels in one large volume, both set in the same universe as The Ship Who Sang: The City Who Fought: Simeon was bored with running the mining and processing station that made up his "body." If anyone was to survive, somehow he must transform his wargaming hobby into the real thing and become The City Who Fought. The Ship Avenged: Ten years later, Joat, the eleven year old techno-demon heroine of the first novel is now an adult herself. She and her ship are on the trail of the Kolnari space raiders, trying to stop them before they can spread an infectious, mind-destroying disease among the inhabited stars and destroy civilization throughout the galaxy. At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management). "Anne McCaffrey and S.M. Stirling have, in The City Who Fought, combined her brain-ships and his military expertise to produce a superior book." ¾Chicago Sun-Times "McCaffrey and Stirling create vivid heroes and villains in a complex and deadly game." ¾Publishers Weekly "Intriguing . . . McCaffrey and Stirling have produced a book that expands the boundaries of the series to which it belongs, yet remains consistent with the cycle's overall design. Fans of both writers should be more than pleased." ¾Dragon "[The Ship Avenged is a] compelling story of resourcefulness and politics in space." ¾ Midwest Book Review

This volume contains two Verne stories that share only one thing in common: they both feature water. They have been published together before but never with the added bonus short story. A Floating City is the story of a trans-Atlantic trip on a monstrous passenger vessel-larger than ever build in Verne's time-and features rekindled friendships, old enemies, a passenger who is certain the ship is doomed, storms, deaths at sea, a mysterious insane woman, Niagara Falls and a duel. The Blockade Runners is the tale of a small ship and her crew used to run the blockades meant to halt resupplying of cities and military forts during the U.S. Civil War. It tells of the perils they face and of their fate. Finally, a small treat in Verne's The Mutineers Of The Bounty. Based on the true story that reached France it recounts the tale of the mutineers and their Captain.

Starting in 1916, Texans built seventeen four- and five-masted sailing ships out of East Texas pine, making a significant contribution in World War I. The ships' careers carried them to Europe, South America, both American coasts, and even eighty miles up the Danube River. In Wooden Ships from Texas, Richard W. Bricker brings to light this fascinating, but little-known, period in Texas maritime history. Bricker unearthed a considerable quantity of archival material, allowing him to describe them and make at least a partial career tracking of each vessel. The first ship built was the City of Orange, and her irascible captain provided a memorable maiden voyage from Orange, Texas, to Genoa, Italy. Official documents told a story of events like those found in sea fiction: shanghaiing, cruelty to seaman, excessive drinking, and pistol waving. A rare story is told, too: an order to jettison part of the cargo with no apparent good cause. Out of fourteen ships builit at one shipyard, four burned and one was sunk by a U-boat off the coast of Spain. These losses did not spell total disaster for the fleet, however. Only three lives were lost and a significant quantity of cargo had been delivered to Europe by some of these ships before tragedy struck. Only one of the other nine vessels burned after being transferred to the Italian flag. Two other vessels were lost at sea after leaving Texas Registry. For each vessel, Bricker provides a description; narratives of the ship's career; and selected photographs of construction, launching, and anchored views. Because no known photographs of the vessels under sail survived, Bricker himself has painted these views. Bricker's engaging and informative text, which also covers a massive effort to build wooden steamships in Texas for the war, will interest Texas history, maritime history, and World War I enthusiasts as well as ship hobbyists.

In this thought-provoking and lyrical debut novel, a young woman's only hope for survival in the dystopian future is a ship, a Noah's Ark, that can rescue 500 people. London burned for three weeks. And then it got worse. . . Young, naive, and frustratingly sheltered, Lalla has grown up in near-isolation in her parents' apartment, sheltered from the chaos of their collapsed civilization. But things are getting more dangerous outside. People are killing each other for husks of bread, and the police are detaining anyone without an identification card. On her sixteenth birthday, Lalla's father decides it's time to use their escape route -- a ship he's built that is only big enough to save five hundred people. But the utopia her father has created isn't everything it appears. There's more food than anyone can eat, but nothing grows; more clothes than anyone can wear, but no way to mend them; and no-one can tell her where they are going.

A time long ago, on the planet of Boldly, a race was on the verge of extinction with little hope left to find a way to stop it. The leader and his scientist tried taking DNA from other species on the planet to create a new life form. A new life they did create, yet it was not acceptable. The scientist told the leader, A female we must have. This statement brought many questions as to how or where. The only females on the planet were infertile. As they sat and pondered as to how they would come about such females, an idea occurred. Lets build a ship, said the scientist, to carry us to other worlds in search of a female.
