"Significance : The Lesser Brothers, 1629-1945 Market Street, was assigned a California Historical Society Resource Status Code of 3CS in the 2006-2007 survey for the Market and Octavia Area Plan, indicating that it appeared elegible for the California Register of Historical Resources (California Register) as an individual property through survey evaluations. The property was evaluated in 2017 by VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consultants for eligibility for individuals property through survey evaluation. VerPlanck Historic Preservation Consultants found the property to be individually eligible under Criterion 3 (Architecture). The following statement of significance is excerpted from Historic Resource Evaluation: Market and Brady Historic Preservation Consulting on March 8, 2017: 'According to the Market and Octavia Plan Survey, the Lesser Bros. Building at 1629-45 Market Street appears eligible for the Calfiornia Register under Criterion 3 (Design /Construction), at the local level of significance, with a period of significance of 1926. We agree that the building appears individuallly eligible for listing in the California Register under Criterion 3 as a good and well-preserved example of a masonry commercial block designed by a moderately well-known San Francisco architect in a functional style with Romanesque Revival detailing, the building is a rare, surviving example of a low scale "taxpayer" block on Market Street, and, despite incremental changes to to the storefront it otherwise retains a high degree of integrity. In addition to Criterion 3, we believe that the building may also be eligible under Criterion I (Events) for its association with the Black Self-Help Moving and Storage and the Zebra Murders of 1973-1974 [...] We do not believe that the building is eligible under Criterion 2 (Persons) or Criterion 4 (Information Potential).' The period of significance of 1926 was identified for the subject property's eligibility under Criterion 3. The potential eligibilty under Criterion 1 noted by VerPlanck Historical Presentation Historic Preservation Consulting has not been researched or evalutated further. Page & Turnbull has not performed an additional evaluation of the property."--

The small Boston-built schooner Sultana served as a customs-enforcement interceptor on the North American eastern seaboard in the period leading up to the American Declaration of Independence, when British taxation of American trade was a hugely contentious issue. As a typical workaday British American merchant ship taken into naval service, Sultana offers a rare opportunity to understand a technology of paramount importance to this world, where records for merchant ships are scarce, but where in this case a wealth of information, from plan drawings to the fully-intact logbooks, has survived. The book provides a detailed narrative of the ship's activities, and reveals the nature of life on board and the day to day business of operating a small sailing ship. It explores the technology of the ship and her sailing qualities as revealed by the ship's logs and also by the performance of a modern replica.
