In his lifetime Verne wrote dozens of novels, many of which are well known ("From the Earth to the Moon," "20,000 Leagues Under the Seas," "Around the World in Eighty Days," Etc.) while many others are not ("Off On a Comet," "The Voyages and Adventures of Captain Hatteras," Etc.). In addition to his novels he also wrote numerous short stories, some for publication in the magazines of the day and others to be published in small, inexpensive editions. Not to mention his plays. So we won't mention them except to say that one is included in this collection. This book is a small collection of a few of his shorter works-ones that have been translated into English-and are presented not as prime examples of the man's work but as historical documents. They are: In The Year 2889, A Voyage In a Balloon, Measuring a MEridian, The Pearl of Lima, Mr. Chimpanzee (a play) Dr. Triflegas: A Fantastic Tale, and An Express Of The Future. Enjoy!

This third collection of some of Jules Verne's shorter stories contains several gems. They range from a dramatic tale taking place in old Mexico, a story about an armament manufacturer and his fortune, some monkey business, a visit to a utopian city and a previously unpublished story attributed to J. Verne. The book contains: - The Begum's Fortune - A Drama in Mexico - Gil Braltar - An ideal City - The Claims Against The Female Driver Most of these have restored illustrations from either their original publications, or subsequent re-printings. These have been carefully cleaned and balanced so they may be enjoyed. A couple do not seem to have been previously translated, or when they were, entire chapters were omitted. Who knows why, but we have restored them where we could find more complete French versions.

This is the second collection of the shorter stories of Jules Verne. In this volume five tales ranging from the short to novella-length are presented to give a wide variety of his works. This collection is not unique as it was first published in 1887 under the title of A Winter Amid The ice. That is also the title of one of the stories. The others are: -Dr. Ox's Experiment -Master Zacharius -A Drama In The Air -A Winter Amid the Ice -The 40th French Ascent of Mont Blanc Very little is seen of these works in this day and age, unlike his more famous novels such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Seas, The Mysterious Island, etc. We believe it is about time to get these back into the hands of readers. Enjoy

Jules Gabriel Verne was born on February 8th, 1828 on |le Feydeau, a small artificial island on the Loire River in Nantes. His father wanted his son to take over the family law practice. Jules started along this course and despite graduating with a licence en droit in January 1851 was soon diverted by the lure of literature and by his own ambitious talents in this direction. He wrote for the theatre and for magazines and soon with the publication of his first novel; Five Weeks in a Balloon on January 31st, 1863 he had begun his career as an admired and popular author. For many, many years the works flowed, usually no less than and often more than two volumes per year. His meticulous research and imaginative setting and narratives soon established him as a top selling author and he became both famous and wealthy. By publishing firstly as a serialised book and then as a complete book sales swelled as did his reputation. His earnings increased further due to the runaway success from the stage adaptations of Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (1874) and Michel Strogoff (1876), Strangely he was overlooked for honours. He was not even nominated for membership of the Acadm̌ie Franȧise. After the death of both his mother and Hetzel, Jules began to publish darker works but still at a prodigious rate. In 1888, Jules entered politics and was elected town councillor of Amiens, and then served for fifteen years. Jules was now entering the last period of his life. His works continued to flow albeit at a slower pace. His reconciled with his son, Michel who now became an active contributor to his father's works and, when the senior Verne died, would continue to contribute and publish his father's works, ensuring that the work was kept in the public eye and the legacy preserved. On March 24th, 1905, while ill with diabetes, Jules Verne died at his home at 44 Boulevard Longueville, Amiens. As a legacy Jules Verne is forever remembered as 'The Father of Science Fiction'. With his rigorous research Jules was not only able to make his works realistic but also to project forward and predict many new things that would eventually come to pass - either in real life or as the basis for others to use in their own science fiction. Extraordinary indeed.

A classic Victorian science fiction novelfrom the author of Around the World in Eighty Days and Journey to the Center of the Earth. From one of the fathers of science fiction and the great-grandfather of steampunk—and purportedly coauthored by his son, Michel—this 1889 story covers a day in the life of a newspaper magnate a millennium into the future. The novel is replete with technological predictions both prescient and improbable, such as video telephones, pneumatic transportation tubes, air cars, built-in furniture, a managed climate, and scientifically prepared food. “An exercise in letting imagination run free on describing the world of a thousand years into the future.” —genxposé
