Some physiologist has defined life as the sum of the lives of all the cells, and in this definition we find the secret of the great strength of which life is capable. 'tis not in' one cell, but in the close union and harmony of all. Fraternity life is also composed of cells, and as each cell of us is strong or weak so is our fraternity life. Great care, then, should be exercised in picking from among our class-mates men to be our brothers, for to 'have one weak cell is to destroy harmony. But how should we select men? Might be asked. Committees of strong men have been appointed to delve into the statistics, to dig out the facts and to pre sent carefully worked out conclusions. These men, who three years ago would have willingly done this work in behalf lof their own or ders, would hardly have felt it incumbent upon them or in any wise a duty to do it. For the good of all. Yet they are doing these things to day and doing them with no thought of particular and special good to their own individual fraternities. The education which is coming out of it is free to all and belongs to all. Excerpt from The Sigma Phi Epsilon Journal, Vol. 13: May 1, 1916 On December 6, 1905, there was organized at the University of Minnesota, the Bishop Gilbert Society, having as its object the promotion of the spiritual and social life of the Episcopal church men at the University. Monthly meetings of a social nature were held at the homes of the members. In the spring of 1909 a corporation of prominent clergy and laymen of the Episcopal church was organized under the name of The University House, incorporated under the laws of the State of Minnesota, for the purpose of acquiring property to be used as a center for the activities of the society. It purchased and now owns property near the campus, in which twelve men took up their residence in the fall of 1909. In the school year of 1911-12 realizing the inadequacy of the society's organization, the members took steps to perfect an organization of greater stability and purpose, taking the name of Chi Rho Theta Fraternity. At that time it was planned to form a national fraternity with membership restricted quite largely to the Episcopal Church. After due consideration this policy was found to be too narrow and given up as impractical. The fraternity prospered as a local, choosing for its members men in college activities regardless of church affiliation.
