Man differs from the lower animals because he preserves his past experiences. What happened in the past is lived again in memory. About what goes on today hangs a cloud of thoughts concerning similar things undergone in bygone days. With the animals, an experience perishes as it happens, and each new doing or suffering stands alone. But man lives in a world where each occurrence is charged with echoes and reminiscences of what has gone before, where each event is a reminder of other things. Hence he lives not, like the beasts of the field, in a world of merely physical things but in a world of signs and symbols. A stone is not merely hard, a thing into which one bumps; but it is a monument of a deceased ancestor. A flame is not merely something which warms or burns, but is a symbol of the enduring life of the household, of the abiding source of cheer, nourishment and shelter to which man returns from his casual wanderings. Instead of being a quick fork of fire which may sting and hurt, it is the hearth at which one worships and for which one fights. What role, if any, does formal logic play in characterizing epistemically rational belief? Traditionally, belief is seen in a binary way - either one believes a proposition, or one doesn't. Given this picture, it is attractive to impose certain deductive constraints on rational belief: that one's beliefs be logically consistent, and that one believe the logical consequences of one's beliefs. A less popular picture sees belief as a graded phenomenon. This picture (explored more bydecision-theorists and philosophers of science thatn by mainstream epistemologists) invites the use of probabilistic coherence to constrain rational belief. But this latter project has often involved defining graded beliefs in terms of preferences, which may seem to change the subject away fromepistemic rationality.Putting Logic in its Place explores the relations between these two ways of seeing beliefs. It argues that the binary conception, although it fits nicely with much of our commonsense thought and talk about belief, cannot in the end support the traditional deductive constraints on rational belief. Binary beliefs that obeyed these constraints could not answer to anything like our intuitive notion of epistemic rationality, and would end up having to be divorced from central aspects of ourcognitive, practical, and emotional lives.But this does not mean that logic plays no role in rationality. Probabilistic coherence should be viewed as using standard logic to constrain rational graded belief. This probabilistic constraint helps explain the appeal of the traditional deductive constraints, and even underlies the force of rationally persuasive deductive arguments. Graded belief cannot be defined in terms of preferences. But probabilistic coherence may be defended without positing definitional connections between beliefsand preferences. Like the traditional deductive constraints, coherence is a logical ideal that humans cannot fully attain. Nevertheless, it furnishes a compelling way of understanding a key dimension of epistemic rationality.

This book aims to redress the balance in the field of Contemporary Philosophy, considered predominantly male, by highlighting the philosophical achievements of various female figures during the period 1870-1970. Contemporary Philosophy is generally presented by its historians as a field founded entirely by men, with no prominent female contributors. Historical investigation of the development of contemporary analytic philosophy, for example, usually centres around Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein, with occasional ventures into Moore or the Vienna Circle. Such accounts leave out vast swathes of the historical record (from early 19th century to 20th century), in particular the women, including Christine Ladd-Franklin, Sophie Bryant, E.E.C. Jones, Susan Stebbing, Dorothy Wrinch, Alice Ambrose, Margaret MacDonald, Martha Kneale, Ruth Barcan Marcus and Ayda Ignez Arruda publishing on themes central to analytic philosophy– logic, language, realism, and relations. It is noteworthy that this pattern in historiography is not unique to one strand of philosophy or one part of the world but re-appears again and again. In the continental tradition, the development of Schopenhauer's philosophy leaves out significant contributions of women such as Olga Plümacher. The chapters in this book examine central themes from the perspective of female philosophers to provide a fuller picture of Philosophy of this period. The nineteen items collected here, including his major work, Reconstruction in Philosophy, evolved in the main from Dewey's travel, touring, lecturing, and teaching in Japan and China. Ralph Ross notes in his Introduction to this volume that Reconstruction in Philosophy is "a radical book . . . a pugnacious book by a gentle man." It is in this book that Dewey summarizes his version of pragmatism, then called Instrumentalism. For Dewey, the pragmatist, it was people acting on the strength of intelligence modeled on science who could find true ideas, ones "we can assimilate, validate, corroborate, and verify."
