What started as a small sequence of poems about the Starbucks logo grew to monstrous proportions after the poet fell under a siren spell herself. All Day I Dream About Sirens is both an ancient reverie and a screen-induced stupor as these poems reckon with the enduring cultural fascination with siren and mermaid narratives as they span geographies, economies, and generations, chronicling and reconfiguring the male-centered epic and women’s bodies and subjectivities.

A DAY-DREAMER I have been from boyhood, haunted, no matter what my task, by imaginations, mostly approximating some form of fictitious narrative; imaginations beyond my power to banish and seldom entirely within my power to alter, modify or control. Besides, I have, in my sleep, dreamed many dreams which, after waking, I could remember: some dimly, vaguely, or faintly; others clearly, vividly or even intensely. A majority of these dreams have been such as come to most sleepers, but a minority have been such as visit few dreamers. Sometimes I wake with the most distinct recollection of a picture, definite and with a multitude of details. Such was the dream, on the night of February 17th, 1906, in which I saw the vision on which is based the tale of The Song of the Sirens; saw it not as a painted picture, but as if I had been on the cross-trees of a vessel under that intense blue sky, gazing at the magic islet and its portentous occupants. The dream was the more marvelous since there is nothing other in literature or art, suggesting anything which I beheld in that vision of the two living shapes.

"She considered her life: each aspect rested on another, was undercut by its arbitrary predecessor in a deconstructive chain leading back to the blank canvas, to defenseless impulse and unjustifiable whim. She felt seduced by despair, felt a void opening before her; what was this void? The apparition of suicide, the specter of her own death? No, it was the nothingness stretching forever beneath the seemingly concrete aspects of her existence, the eternal blank canvas upon which she had enacted her life (and to which she would eventually return)..." - from The Sirens The interconnected lives and trials of five characters - an Artist, a Seeker, a Seductress, a Dreamer, and an Academic - comprise a novel within this novel, while their author's struggle to achieve his lofty artistic vision forms the framing drama in this unconventional and experimental story of ambition, inspiration, and obsession. The novel's unnamed narrator has failed: the promise of his youth has been spent and ruined, and he fears that he will never achieve the great work of which he - and others - imagined him capable. It is only through a chance encounter with a strange and beautiful woman - a woman who seems to know more about him and his troubles than she should - that he feels himself newly inspired, capable of the ambitious work he once envisioned. But who is this muse, and towards what is she leading him? And what will he discover, when the quest for true expression lures him ever deeper into his own scarred and fractured mind? Whether referred to as mermaid, usalka, mami wata, or by some other name, and whether considered an imaginary being or merely a person with extraordinary abilities, the siren is the remarkable creature that has inspired music and its representations from ancient Greece to present-day Africa and Latin America. This book, co-edited by a historical musicologist and an ethnomusicologist, brings together leading scholars and some talented newcomers in classics, music, media studies, literature, and cultural studies to consider the siren and her multifaceted relationships to music across human time and geography.

What happens when a varied group of men and women, married and unmarried, from our own complex culture is thrown together for six dramatic weeks with the people of a simpler, happier society, free from the inhibitions and tensions of the twentieth century? Irving Wallace’s provocative novel is the story of this confrontation, as an American field team of anthropologists and laymen descends upon a remote Polynesian island to study a unique and hitherto undiscovered way of life. The visiting Americans are supposed to be dispassionate observers. Yet each brings to the island his own problems, attitudes, and prejudices. The team consists of nine oddly assorted Americans, led by Dr. Maud Hayden, the world-famous woman who is America’s leading anthropologist. With her are her son and his young wife Claire; a liberal-minded photographer, anxious to remove his sixteen-year-old daughter from her fast adolescent crowd; a warm, homely nurse whose only attraction is her unique ability to give love; a fussy bachelor attempting to flee from a dominating mother; a female psychoanalyst whose private problems rival those of her patients; and the wealthy wife of the team’s sponsor, a one-time dancer oppressed with the knowledge that she is now middle-aged. On The Three Sirens, these visitors are brought face to face with uninhibited behavior and customs that seem to be a shocking assault, a challenge, to their most cherished beliefs about love, sex, marriage, child rearing and justice. In this Polynesian village they find a society where the monotony of marriage is relieved by the freedom to enjoy other mates one week of the year; where the dissatisfactions and repressions of men and women, both married and unmarried, are relieved in a mysterious Social Aid Hut; where women over forty can enjoy life without the destructive feeling that youth is the only happiness; where unattractive girls are desired for those attributes that are ignored in our own cult of beauty; where confused adolescents are given the security of learning firsthand the facts of life; where grown men do not have to prove their virility by means of their careers.... Irving Wallace’s powerful novel tells the story of the shattering impact that this seemingly Utopian way of life has on the Americans who have come to study the people of The Three Sirens and who suddenly find themselves instead studying the nature of their own desires, fears and passions. Their reactions are the theme of a dramatic and brilliant work of fiction that ruthlessly explores the inmost nature of modern man and his society. Totally engrossing in its outspoken portrayal of an exotic culture, thoughtful in its examination of contemporary American morality, above all swiftly paced and exciting in its storytelling, The Three Sirens is Irving Wallace’s most ambitious and satisfying work of fiction to date.

The seaside town is full of adults and children who have strange links to creatures. It's the heart of the secret Society for the Protection of Mythical Creatures, a group of people sworn to ensure that mythical beasts are kept safe. The Sirens, who for generations have kept their deadly song to themselves, are once again luring humans to their deaths. It doesn't take long for Connie to realise that the victims are oil workers. The Sirens are fed-up with their seas being polluted, but should the Society protect the Sirens or the oil industry? Connie doesn't think she has a role to play, until it becomes clear that she's a Universal - the first person in over a century who can communicate with every type of beast on earth and in the air. Her power is immense. It corrupted the previous Universal . . . and now he's back. And he'll use any means he can - from violence to the terrifying Storm Giants - to turn Connie to the dark side.
