Excerpt from The Social Doctrine of the Sermon on the Mount Man, then, is social and individual. And a man on the way of redemption, a believer in Christ, is an indi vidual member of a great society, or kingdom, - the Catholic Church; under the authority of the Church with its powers of legislation and discipline - its power of the keys, its authority to bind and loose, -but not tinder its authority in an arbitrary sense; because its authority extends only to applying the law of its Master, whom the man's own conscience has recognized and adored, and who Himself exhibited so careful a respect for human individuality. I am concerned now, not with the wide subject of Christian authority and liberty, but with a particular form of Christian authority, namely, the authority which the Church ought to exercise in matters of social morality and that, with special reference to the Sermon on the Mount considered as supplying the fundamental moral law of our Lord's kingdom. Excerpt from Studies in the Sermon on the Mount N order to understand the Sermon on the Mount, it lis necessary to have the mind of the Preacher, and this knowledge can be gained by anyone who will receive the Holy Spirit (see Luke XI. 13, John XX. 22, Acts XIX. The Holy Ghost is the only expounder of the teachings of Jesus. The one abiding method of interpretation of the teachings of Jesus is the Spirit of Jesus in the heart of a believer applying His principles to the particular circum stances in which he is placed. Be renewed in the spirit of your mind, says Paul, that you may make out what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Beware of placing Our Lord as Teacher first instead of as Saviour. That tendency is prevalent to-day, and it is a' dangerous tendency. We must know Him first as Saviour before His teaching has any meaning for us, or before it has any meaning other than that of an ideal which leads to despair. Fancy coming to men and women with defective lives and defiled hearts and wrong main springs, and telling them to be pure in heart! What is the use of giving us an ideal we cannot possibly attain? We are happier without knowing it. If Jesus is only a Teacher, then all He can do is to tantalise us by erecting a standard we cannot come anywhere near. But if we know Him first as Saviour, by being born again from above, we know that He did not come to teach us only He came to make us what He teaches we should be. The Sermon on the Mount is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is having His way with us. Excerpt from The Sermon on the Mount There is one mind common to all indi vidual men. Every man is an inlet to the same and to all of the same. Who hath access to this universal mind is a party to all that is or can be done, for this is the only and sovereign agent. This is the Mind of the Spirit, the same Mind that was in Christ Jesus. From It comes all inspiration and by It alone can Its utterances be interpreted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Others hold that His language was intended to be and is binding for all time and all conditions, and that the Church can never fulfil the function of salt to the world until these precepts are literally obeyed. Excerpt from The Sermon on the Mount: A Practical Exposition There is no plant in the spiritual garden of the Church of England which at the present moment needs more diligent watering and tending than the practical, devotional study of Holy Scripture. The extent to which spiritual sloth, or reaction against Protestant individualism, or the excuse of critical difficulties is allowed to minister to the neglect of this most necessary practice, is greatly to be deplored. It is surprising in how few parts of the Bible critical difficulties, be they what they may, need be any bar to its practical use. Excerpt from Commentary on the Sermon on the Mount First of all there have fallen upon this chapter the vulgar hogs and asses, jurists and sophists, the right hand of the pope and his Mamelukes. They have sucked this poison out of this beautiful rose, and scattered it everywhere; they have covered up Christ with it and have exalted and main tained the antichrist, namely, that Christ here does not wish everything which he teaches in the fifth chapter to be regarded by his Christians as com manded and to be observed by them; but that much of it was given merely as advice to such as wish to become perfect, and any who wish may observe these parts; despite the fact that Christ there threatens wrathfullyz - no one shall enter heaven who sets aside one of the least of these commands, - and he calls them in plain words commands. Excerpt from The Sermon on the Mount: Lectures Delivered Glasgow, under whose jurisdiction I am placed, and in this way obtained, at least, a local importance, apart altogether from its intrinsic merits. Portions of it, sentences selected here and there, - were read in that Court, and appeared in the public press; and these, as it seemed to me, were fitted, however little intended, to produce a wrong impression as to the general character of my teaching. In justice to myself, therefore, I have thought it best to publish the entire series. In justice also to the Church, this appears to be the right course; for it is only fair that she should be put in possession of the whole matter on which her Courts have still to decide. Hence these discourses are not printed because the author considers them specially {worthy of such permanent form. They have no claim to critical nicety, or exegetical learning, or even to any peculiar novelty of thought or illustration. They are simply ordinary congregational lectures which have had the misfortune to be denounced as containing heretical doctrine; and they are now published because neither should the accused be condemned, nor should the judge pronounce sentence, on isolated fragments of what ought to be re garded as one indivisible whole. I deprecate no severity of criticism, then, whether ecclesiastical or literary, but I make this statement, that the critic may have the whole case before him when he applies himself to his task.
