Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience difficulties in social interactions, communication, and engage in restricted, repetitive behaviors or interest (Harstad et al., 2014; Neal & Hattier, 2012). These symptoms may hinder a child's ability to develop and maintain quality friendships. Children with ASD have a harder time making friends compared to their, neurotypical peers. These hindrances may be stemming from core social-cognitive difficulties and ASD symptoms (De Boer, Pijl, Post, & Minnaert, 2013). Recreational activities may provide an important social context for children to develop these social skills and friendships. Current research has found that recreational activities have influenced neurotypical children's personal and social skills, including self-perceptions, positive social behaviors, feelings and attitudes (Durlak et al., 2010). Neurotypical peers may find it difficult to interact with and include peers with ASD due to many of the symptoms of ASD. Research has found that various peer-training programs can create more inclusive environments and promote more social initiation from children with ASD (Owen-DeSchryver et al., 2008). As these programs are not readily available for all, many parents seek out additional social opportunities, in the form of peer supported recreational activities, that might facilitate connections. Many neurotypical peers do not have access to or would not be interested in peer training programs, however may be drawn to participating in a less structured recreational activities environment where peer acceptance can also be developed. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of participation in peer supported recreational activities on individuals with ASD's friendship quality and social skills, and their neurotypical peers' peer acceptance.

One of the biggest issues experienced by people diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is difficulty with social communication and interaction, which affects an individual's involvement with peers. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of participation in soccer activities on social interactions for children with ASD. This study attempted to answer the following question: Does participation in an organized sports soccer activity result in increased social interaction for two children with ASD? This study used pre-post treatment, often called an AB single-subject design. This study utilized an AB design, where data was obtained regarding the frequency and duration of participants' interaction before and after receiving an intervention. This study analyzed data that measured and reported changes in social interaction that occurred through interactive play. Seven sessions were separated into two baseline sessions and five interventions sessions, with two participants, a research assistant as coach, and two trained typically-developing peers; these sessions were video recorded. This researcher compared the total number of interactions of frequency and duration the participants in each session. This study was successful in answering the simple question of whether the amount of social interaction initiated by the children with ASD increased, as measured by frequency and duration of interactions. A t-test was conducted to address the question in frequency and duration. The significant increase in the frequency of the initiated interactions between the children with ASD, when they were communicating with each other, form baseline average demonstrates a clear pattern of increased confidence with attempting to engage with a peer. This study investigated the effects of four neurotypical preschoolers’ attitudes towards nine of their peers with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and how that impacts their play behaviors. Participants were all male ranging from 3 years to 6 years of age. Children’s attitudes towards their peers with ASD were evaluated using three methods: sociometric peer ratings, child interviews and a social acceptance scale. Children with ASD’s behaviors were observed over a three-week period during free play to collaborate the results. Results from the sociometric peer ratings showed that a child with ASD received the highest rating from his peers. The interviews with the neurotypical peers did not demonstrate a clear awareness of a disability on the part of the children with ASD. The findings indicated that some of the lower functioning children with ASD were not nominated at all as being different and some of the neurotypical children were identified as having difficulty talking or behaving well. Consistent with the literature, this study found more instances of non-play behavior compared to play behavior in children with ASD. Taken altogether, the results showed that the neurotypical children’s awareness of their peers with ASD as being different did not seem to impact their play behaviors.
