This book brings the theme of prayer into anthropological discussion. Across diverse significant ethnographic case studies, five anthropologists attend to prayers and how they are performed and seen to intervene in the social world. The studies include Pentecostals in Zambia, Charismatic Christians in Ghana, Protestants in Scotland, Eastern Orthodox Christians in Romania, and Catholics in Syria. Across these ethnographic cases, the book argues that focusing on the social life of prayer offers a significant way to engage with matters close to people. Prayers are a way to map affect and the affective relationships people hold in what they are oriented towards and care about. Taking its cue from Marcel Mauss, the book invites us to go beyond the individual and see how prayers always point to a broader social landscape of obligation and affective investment. Focusing on the social life of prayers, the book posits, accordingly entices a particular form of situated comparison of diverse Christian traditions that pushes the scholarly conversation on Christianity to consider central questions of agency, responsibility and subjectivity. No one can doubt that the Bible has exerted a tremendous influence on Western civilization since the dawn of Christianity. But few of us have considered the precise nature of that influence in particular historical contexts. I have tried to show them how the knowledge of the laws of God as we discover them both in the social life of mankind generally, and especially in the social life described in the Bible, may be applied in establishing the Kingdom of God, the highest ideal of society in each community and in the whole earth. This book contains the substance of these lectures wrought into form for popular reading. It is sometimes said "There is more sociology than theology in the Bible." Many books have been written upon Biblical Theology, treating the subject in a great variety of ways. This is the first book, as far as I know, upon Biblical Sociology. Books on Christian Sociology are generally confined to the teachings of Christ, or to a description of the Christian Society of today. In this book I try to gather the most important facts and principles of the society of the whole Bible from Genesis to Revelation, to classify them in a sociological way, and to consider what light they throw upon some of the social problems of today. The book must be in the nature of an experiment both as to the subject and the manner of its treatment. I must try what seems to me the most attractive of the many possible ways of studying the matter. I make no claim of its being the best way; it is only suggestive.
