None of them ever plowed these waters; that is to say, before us no folk ever practised machine production, let its daughters work away from home, bestowed leisure upon multitudes of its wives, saved its babies, vanquished disease, and slew its foes by mechanism, to the extent that we do. So study of the past can not reassure us as to how these things are going to work out. Science and Invention have borne us away from the routes followed by any previous society. They have brought us into strange latitudes where we have nothing to go by. And they do not allow us to feel our way deliberately, put out scout-boats, take soundings. They hurry us on. So the best we can do is to set watchers to scan the horizon. The sociologist is just a man in a crow's nest who knows no more of this sea than his fellows. Since the floodgates of political privilege have been opened, and participation in political affairs has been vouchsafed to all, we find everywhere a progressively increasing apathy in matters relating to politics. The preeminence of the State politically conceived, has been called into question. Its sovereignty has been shorn of many of its mystical characteristics. Other forms of corporate organisation are pressing for recognition. We may in turn see arising before our eyes a new, great social institution. Like feudalism it is in its essence unpolitical. As Lord Bryce has pointed out feudalism was a social and legal system, only indirectly and by consequence a political one. We may to-day note that industrialism, which may serve to denominate this new institution, is a social and economic system, only indirectly political. Such would appear to be the trend of history. Excerpt from The Century Rural Life Books: The Suburban Trend Of any sociology which this book may contain, much the greater part has been drawn from the author's experience. No one who, for years, has shuttled daily back and forth between suburb and city can have escaped the frequent necessity of formulating his apologia for suburban life. One covers a matter of a quarter of a million miles of distance in about twenty years of fairly average commuting. It is not too much to estimate that at least once for every two hundred miles the commuter has been challenged to defend his faith. Some of these occasions arise incidentally out of friendly exchanges between fellow-commuters. Here is the questioning brother who is doubtful whether or not to give it up and move back to the city; here, on the other hand, the rampant assurance of the neighbor whose zeal for suburban life is still more assertive and robust than one's own. Challenges of another sort come from the commiserations or pleasantries of city dwellers, who keep on contrasting their own happier lots, in season and out. All told, the confirmed suburbanite is virtually compelled to develop a sort of social philosophy about which his numerous observations tend to organize themselves. Enough commuting anecdotes have fastened upon the Erie Railroad alone to supply the essence of quite a respectable suburban sociology. It is in such informal materials that the book has its origins.
