Leopards (Panthera pardus) are the most widespread large wild cat, yet despite this wide distribution, comparatively little is known about the movement patterns and fine-scale social organisation of this elusive species. This lack of knowledge has brought the sustainability of hunting quotas in sub-Saharan Africa into question. A concern exists that decisions are based on limited amounts of data that are not necessarily representative of leopards across the sub-continent. The broad objective of this study was to investigate and describe the socio-spatial organisation of leopards in Botswana's Northern Tuli Game Reserve (NTGR).

"This third, extensively revised edition of The Mammals of the Southern African Subregion contains detailed descriptions of all mammals that occur naturally on the African mainland south of the Cunene and Zambezi rivers, together with all mammals indigenous to the subregion's coastal waters. The rapid accumulation of new information resulting from mammal research in southern Africa, together with radical taxonomic changes across all levels of mammalian classification, have necessitated this new edition, which presents the best and latest data accurately in one comprehensive volume for use not only by scientists but also by an increasingly wide audience of general readers with an interest in the natural history of southern Africa." "J. D. Skinner and C. T. Chimimba have revised, expanded and updated the text in a major project overseen by an editorial committee constituted by the Mammal Research Institute at the University of Pretoria. Specialists on each mammalian order have served as subeditors, and a range of independent and internationally recognised authorities have reviewed every species description." "In this edition all the distribution maps and many of the illustrations of mammal prints have been updated and redrawn, several new colour plates have been added, and the whole design of this definitive reference work has been enhanced to ensure easy access to information."--BOOK JACKET.

The large carnivores reign supreme in the African wild - superior, powerful, skillful and feared. From the big cats to the endangered wild dog and Ethiopian wolf, the often-maligned hyenas and the opportunistic jackel, these hunters captivate, fascinate and excite, and provide the raw drama of Africa, sought after by many wildlife lovers. This text brings many years of study and practical research in revealing the origins, the present struggle for survival and the uncertain future of Africa's predatory mammals. The examination of their behaviour, social make-up, relations and interactions is supported by dramatic photography.

First published in 1993, with a new and updated preface, this book is based on two years of intensive field study in Kruger National Park in South Africa. Ted Bailey examines leopard population characteristics, activity and habitat use patterns, movements, feeding ecology, and social organization, and provides new information on leopard mortality, scavenging, and relationships to other large predators and to humans. Illustrated with photographs, maps, graphs, charts, and tables. For professional wildlife biologists, students, and others concerned with the natural history of large carnivores. Ted Bailey is a retired Kenai National Wildlife Refuge wildlife biologist who has lived on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska for more than 27 years. He is an adjunct instructor at the Kenai Peninsula College. "Bailey has added a substantial and high-quality work." Science 1994 264:1004-1005 "The leopard remains an enigma in conservation. It is a difficult task for biologists and managers to balance their desires to protect such a species and also promote systems increasing the values people place on the species. It may be the mystery and chase that elevate the value of the trophy, be it fur or photographic. This book provides clues for many new mysteries around the leopard. J Wildlife Management 1995 59:191-192 "It represents simply the most comprehensive treatise on the leopard available to date." Julian C. Kerbis Peterhans, Center for Evolutionary and Environmental Biology, The Field Museum

Despite their low species density, hyenas are both unique and vital components of most African and some Asian ecosystems. Although there are only 4 species, they tend to clash with the interests of humans to a greater extent than many other mammals and one of the biggest obstacles facing those committed to the conservation of this species is the negative feelings that many people have towards hyenas. This action plan sets out to address some of the problems facing this species of animal, particularly the issue of public perception and awareness, and provides guidelines to rectify this situation.

Cheetahs: Biology and Conservation reports on the science and conservation of the cheetah. This volume demonstrates the interdisciplinary nature of research and conservation efforts to study and protect the cheetah. The book begins with chapters on the evolution, genetics, physiology, ecology and behavior of the species, as well as distribution reports from range countries. These introductory chapters lead into discussions of the challenges facing cheetah survival, including habitat loss, declining prey base, human-wildlife conflict, illegal trade, and newly-emerging threats, notably climate change. This book also focuses on conservation strategies and solutions, including environmental education and alternative livelihoods. Chapters on the role of captive cheetahs to conservation and the long-term research of the species are included, as are a brief discussion of the methods and analyses used to study the cheetah. The book concludes with the conservation status and future outlook of the species. Cheetahs: Biology and Conservation is a valuable resource for the regional and global communities of cheetah conservationists, researchers, and academics. Although cheetah focussed the book provides information relevant to the study of broader topics such as wildlife conservation, captive breeding, habitat management, conservation biology and animal behaviour. Cover photograph by Angela Scott Includes chapters by the world’s leading cheetah researchers and practitioners, who have focused their efforts on this high-profile species of conservation concern Provides findings as a combination of scientific detail and basic explanations so that they can be available not only to cheetah researchers and conservationists, but also to policy makers, business leaders, zoo managers, academics, students, and people interested in the cheetah and its future Presents the current knowledge of the species, helping lay the foundations and best practices for cheetah conservation and research worldwide Additional protocols and forms (which were provided by authors) can be found at the Cheetahs: Biology and Conservation companion site: https://www.elsevier.com/books-and-journals/book-companion/9780128040881
