The languages of mainland Southeast Asia evidence an impressive array of elaborate grammatical resources, such as echo words, phonaesthetic words, chameleon affixes, chiming derivatives, onomatopoeic forms, ideophones and expressives. Speakers of these languages fashion grammatical works of art in order to express and convey emotions, senses, conditions and perceptions that enrich discourse. This book provides a detailed comparative overview of the mechanisms by which aesthetic qualities of speech operate as part of speakers' grammatical knowledge. Each chapter focuses on a different language and explores the grammatical information of a number of well- and lesser-known languages from mainland Southeast Asia. It will be of great interest to syntacticians, morphologists, linguistic anthropologists, language typologists, cognitive scientists interested in language, and instructors of Southeast Asian languages.

Once upon a time, there lived an old couple known as the Bamboo Crafts People. They were happy but lonely, so they prayed for a child to love in their old age. One night under a full moon, Mr. Bamboo-Cutter saw a strange sight. Many monkeys were gathered by a golden bamboo acting crazy. On the next full moon, he returned. When the monkeys disappeared he put his hand on the bamboo. Ouch! his hand was stuck to the burning hot bamboo. With his knife he, cut into the bamboo. Inside he saw a laughing little baby. "Oh, Lord Buddha. Thank you for the beautiful little girl." The old couple was so happy. They named her Bamboo Princess. Everyone in the village was talked about her beauty and her kindness Girls wanted to look like her, and boys wanted to marry her. One day, a wise young man arrived. He was a healer with musical hands. The Princess was overjoyed. She asked him to stay and take care of her aging parents. He agreed, but she told him she had to return to her true home on the moon. Mr. Music Hands asked everyone to save the Princess The next evening, a strong army gathered to protect the Princess. When a shooting star hit the roof of the tiny, old house, the Princess began floating high above the clouds. "Good-bye. Whenever the moon is full, I will be looking over you." All the children in the village knew this story and soon they learned healing ways of tapping, musical hands to help their elders. This is the story of how the compassionate Princess and Mr. Music Hands brought peace and health to the land. We can all benefit from music hands. Hymnal Companion To Sound The Bamboo written by I-to Loh and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Church music categories.

A new, highly authoritative reference for all things related to Asian Christian hymnody, this tome examines the hymns of "Sound the Bamboo "in their historical, cultural, and spiritual contexts of 22 countries. Noted hymnologist I-to Loh has gathered and assembled his studies and experiences and that of many colleagues relating to the history and practice of hymnody in a part of the world that comprises many cultures and countries, not to mention spiritual influences. Few resources, especially ones accessible to Western readers, have delved into the Christian sacred music of Asia, and those that have tend to give only minimal examples, attempt to somehow combine all of Asia under a single umbrella, or examine only a few countries. This book, on the other hand, includes in-depth, all-encompassing information in addition to the usual background stories of texts and tunes of specific hymns in the related hymnal and biographies of their contributors.
