Lo Special Air Service (SAS) è il principale corpo speciale dell'esercito britannico. Solo i Reggimenti di riserva, il 21° e il 23°, reclutano tra i civili per una ferma di 18 mesi; si tratta, quindi, di un percorso relativamente diretto per un civile che voglia candidarsi e entrare a far parte del SAS. L'addestramento di cinque mesi e il processo di selezione per entrare a far parte del SAS sono assolutamente intensi: solo 10 soldati su 125 che si candidano superano l'addestramento. E solo i candidati più tenaci, più forti e più motivati riescono a farne parte. Il processo di selezione per entrare a far parte del SAS prevede uno dei più difficili programmi di addestramento militare al mondo. Il suo scopo è quello di testare i candidati fino al limite estremo delle loro capacità fisiche e mentali. Sebbene sia raro, si è sentito parlare di candidati che sono morti durante il processo di selezione. Visti i requisiti estremi richiesti per l'addestramento del SAS, solo giovani uomini in salute e in perfette condizioni fisiche e mentali vengono presi in considerazione.
