In the 1960s, East Pakistan was a thriving, growing culture, aspiring to greatness, with Nusrat Rabbee's parents, Dr. Mohammed Fazle Rabbee and Dr. Jahan Ara Rabbee, leading the way. Each at the top of their medical careers, the Rabbees were pillars of the society and trusted advisors to neighbors, family, and friends. Then, in December of 1970, an election turned sour brought continued Martial Law to the land and a situation that crippled the progressive East Pakistani people from thriving in every way, especially economically. Over the course of nine terrifying months, East Pakistan fell under attack from the Pakistani army, who attempted to take away their cultural, moral, and professional leadership all at once. It would take unimaginable destruction and countless deaths, including that of Dr. Nusrat Rabbee's beloved father, for the East Pakistani people to once regain their footing. After the fallout, and for the next several decades, Bangladesh has grown to become a mecca of growth and progress, though Dr. Rabbee reminds readers to not forget the sacrifices and strides made by the relentless champions of the first few decades, the martyrs for the cause of a free Bangladesh, and those few dedicated and educated leaders in every sector, who built the infrastructure and backbone from scratch. In this captivating account of 1971 and beyond, Dr. Rabbee provides readers with a firsthand account of the events that shaped her childhood and which sparked the birth of a nation. Through the lens of a poignant family story, she provides a deeply personal inside look at the violence, unrest, and aftermath of the war. Part memoir, part love story, and part historical text, The Spirit of 1971 gives deep insight and understanding into the history, ancestry, and heritage of country of Bangladesh, and is a must-read for anyone interested in the politics of the region during this tumultuous time.

This expansive study offers an interpretation of the 'new Pentecost': the rise of charismatic Christianity, before, during, and after the 'long 1960s'. It examines the translocal actors, networks, and media which constructed a 'Spiritscape' of charismatic renewal in the Anglo-world contexts of Australia, the British Isles, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. It places this arena also in a wider and dynamic worldwide setting, exploring the ways in which charismatic imaginations of an 'age of the Spirit' were shaped by interpenetrations with the 'Third World', the Soviet Bloc, and beyond in the global Sixties and Seventies. Age of the Spirit explains charismatic developments within Protestantism and Catholicism, mainline and non-denominational churches, and within existing pentecostalisms, and places these in relation to lively scholarly themes such as secularisation, authenticity, and cosmopolitanism. It offers an unrivalled analysis of charismatic music, books, television, conferences, personalities, community living, and controversies in the 1960s and 1970s. It looks forward to the many global legacies of charismatic renewal, for example in relation to the politics of sexuality in the Anglican Communion, or to support for President Donald J. Trump. The essential question at the heart of this book is relevant for scholars and practitioners of Christianity alike: how did charismatic renewal transform the churches in the twentieth century, moving from the periphery to the mainstream?

Efforts to construct a Christian theology of religions have inevitably stumbled on the Christian scandal of particularity—the historical Jesus of Nazareth. What, however, if we began by focusing on the universal presence and activity of God in the world as symbolized by the Holy Spirit? Yong develops just such a pneumatological approach to religions, drawing, by way of resource, on the Pentecostal-charismatic experience of the Spirit. This book thus invites Pentecostals, charismatics, and other Christians to conceive of how a pneumatological approach to religions can invigorate the wider ecumenical conversation. At the same time, it also brings recent Pentecostal-charismatic scholarship into dialogue with a broader audience, including those interested in philosophical theology, world religions, global spiritualities, and comparative religion and theology.

Musical Culture and the Spirit of Irish Nationalism is the first comprehensive history of music’s relationship with Irish nationalist politics. Addressing rebel songs, traditional music and dance, national anthems and protest song, the book draws upon an unprecedented volume of material to explore music’s role in cultural and political nationalism in modern Ireland. From the nineteenth-century Young Irelanders, the Fenians, the Home Rule movement, Sinn Féin and the Anglo-Irish War to establishment politics in independent Ireland and civil rights protests in Northern Ireland, this wide-ranging survey considers music’s importance and its limitations across a variety of political movements.

"Led by the Spirit is an interdisciplinary analysis and evaluation of people's claims to divine guidance that contributes to the understanding of these experiences at two levels. In terms of methodology, this study is an exercise in practical theology - a means of deriving explanations of God, self, and world from the actions of a community of faith - with the practices associated with discernment and decision making in the Pentecostal tradition being the focal point for reflection. In terms of content, insight from object relations psychology and Tillich's theology are woven together with explanations from Pentecostal believers to provide a multilayered understanding and evaluation of the meaning and significance of these experiences."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The investigation centres on the role of the Spirit in Revelation, which the author considers is best defined as the Spirit of Prophecy. A survey of scholarship on the pneumatology of the Apocalypse is followed by a study of intertextual connections. The author’s own religious context within Pentecostalism then informs a possible hermeneutic that is faithful to the ethos of the movement. Biblical and literary studies are situated within the context of a Pentecostal community as attention is paid to the prophecy concerning the temple and the witnesses in Rev 11. This key passage is shown to form the theological as well as the literary centre of the Spirit’s role in Revelation.

An investigation of the term pneuma in Paul's letter to the Galations is needed from the side of NT scholarship, because debate continues over the question about the nature of the crisis in the churches of Galatia and, therefore, about the historical occasion of Paul's statements about the Spirit. The focus of this debate is the character of Paul's opponents in the Galatian churches. Currently, the consensus is limited to a single point: that someone was engaging in a circumcizing campaign in the Galatian churches. But on the other points no agreement exists. The two parts of this study are distinguished in that the first part deals with the historical context of Paul's statements about the Spirit in Galatians: that is, the events because of which Paul wrote the letter, and the nature and social setting of expriences of the Spirit in the life of the Galatian churches. The second part deals with the theology of the Spirit in Paul's message to the Galatians, which has three aspects-soteriology, christology, and eschatology. -from the Introduction
