Michael Maier is a fourteen-year-old boy who is out of school for the summer. His parents are professors at the University, so Michael is home alone during the day. Michael spends his time in the family library, trying to make sense of his grandfathers books on alchemy. One day a nude, semi-transparent figure identifying himself as the Spirit of Alchemy appears and offers to explain the seven steps of alchemy. In a toilet that his grandfather used as an alchemical mini-lab, the Spirit explains the alchemy to Michael and demonstrates the procedures. Using telepathy and telekinesis to move objects, the Spirit appears dressed and able to speak in what sounds like a normal voice.

Theurgy means "the science or art of divine works." In alchemy, this process is called the "Great Work," which is the purification and exaltation of our "lower" nature by the proper application of esoteric principles, so that it may become united with its higher counterparts, whereby we may attain spiritual, and ultimately divine, consciousness. Drawing on the teachings of the Egyptian, Greek, and Hebrew mystery schools and quoting extensively from important alchemical writers, Garstin details this process of purification. Students who are curious about alchemy but daunted by the body of its literature and its strange allegories will find this book to be an excellent introduction. Garstin discusses source alchemical works and clearly explains what their esoteric symbolism means. With the information in this book, students of alchemy can then proceed to make a more informed exploration of the alchemical works and other writings of the Western Mystery Tradition.

The ability to change is available to anyone, even though most people don't trust themselves enough to accomplish such goal.It often seems that changing ourselves is a nearly impossible task, or that changing our life is much easier than changing who we are as a person. But there is much more that we need to know about this topic. This book was created to deny those common beliefs, and tell you something that, unfortunately, most psychiatrists don't know, simply because it implies the understanding of very important spiritual laws still hidden from the vast majority of society. You can change and then change anything you want, but before doing that, you need to understand what makes you who you are, or do the things you do. It implies an awareness about the mechanisms of the mind, the nature of the spirit and the purpose of life.In the following chapters, you will see that any change is possible, once you surrender to the alchemical challenges needed for that to occur. And then, but only then, will you know about your whole potential and how happy you can be in your life.

Most professional historians see the relationship between pre-modern and modern alchemy as one of discontinuity and contrast. Mike A. Zuber challenges this dominant understanding and explores aspects of alchemy that have been neglected by recent work in the history of science. The predominant focus on the scientific aspect of alchemy, such as laboratory experiment, practical techniques, and material ingredients, argues Zuber, marginalizes the things that render alchemy so fascinating: its rich and vivid imagery, reliance on the medium of manuscript, and complicated relationship with religion. Spiritual Alchemy traces the early-modern antecedents of modern alchemy through generations of followers of Jacob Boehme, the cobbler and theosopher of Görlitz. As Boehme's disciples down the generations -- including the Silesian nobleman Abraham von Franckenberg and the London-based German immigrant Dionysius Andreas Freher, among others -- studied his writings, they drew on his spiritual alchemy, adapted it, and communicated it to their contemporaries. Spiritual alchemy combines traditional elements of alchemical literature with Christian mysticism. Defying the boundaries between science and religion, this combination was transmitted from Görlitz ultimately to England. In 1850, it inspired a young woman, later known as Mary Anne Atwood, to write her Suggestive Inquiry into the Hermetic Mystery, usually seen as the first modern interpretation of alchemy. Drawing extensively on manuscript or otherwise obscure sources, Zuber documents continuity between pre-modern and modern forms of alchemy while exploring this hybrid phenomenon.

This book on spiritual alchemy presents an initiate's undertaking of the internal alchemical process. It is a pathway of vision and illumination; and with particular emphasis placed on the induction of the alchemical dream, this movement becomes a visionary transition and passage. The practitioner's psyche moves through the paths of the Opus Magnum, and these paths have a goal--the attainment of the Philosopher's Stone. It is the internal alchemy that acquires access to the ethereal level of the body, and eventually to the enactment of the alchemical Will.
