The Spirit of Chicano Park is a children's book that depicts the history of the creation of an historic park located in the community of Logan Heights in San Diego, California. The park was founded in 1970, as a result of a community Take Over of the land. The park was born out of a communities struggle to create a place for family gatherings amidst the destruction of a community through the enforcement of eminent domain, and the building of Interstate 5 freeway and the Coronado Bridge. The park became a symbol of self-determination and of hope. The park is located underneath the Coronado Bridge and massive cement pillars that hold up the bridge, fill the park's landscaped. Community artists painted murals that depict the history of the park and the history of the Chicano community. Housed in the center of the park, is a one-of-a-kind stage, called a Kiosco. The park is a living legacy of the people of Logan Height. It is a vibrant park with community activities, dance ceremonials, and political gatherings occurring on a regular basis. Chicano Park is known nationally and internationally because of its art, but also because of what it symbolizes to the Chicano/Mexicano community throughout the United States and Mexico. The park was designated as a Historical Landmark in 2016. The book is a full color, historical fiction, children's book written in English and Spanish. The back pages of the book showcase profiles of community organizers, artists, dancers, musicians, low-riders, and other activists.

Chicano Park is a 7.4-acre park located in San Diego City's Barrio Logan beneath the east-west approach ramps of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge where the bridge bisects Interstate 5. The park was created in 1970 after residents in Barrio Logan participated in a 0́−takeover0́+ of land that was being prepared for a substation of the California Highway Patrol. Barrio Logan the second largest barrio on the West Coast until national and state transportation and urban renewal public policies, of the 1950's and 1960's, relocated thousands of residents from their self-contained neighborhood to create Interstate 5, to rezone the area from residential to light industrial, and to build the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. The decision to build a substation for the California Highway Patrol on the site the community had identified for a park became the defining moment as the residents took it upon themselves to create their own lasting landmark, Chicano Park, a barrio logo in their own style. Since April 22, 1970, the park has been utilized by the Chicano community of San Diego as a place for social and political events. Its facilities include children's playgrounds, restrooms, a Kiosko or dance pavilion, picnic areas, multi-purpose courts, open play lawns, a raised plaza, community gardens, sculptures, fountain, and two small parking areas. The park is distinguished by murals painted on the pillars, abutments, and ramps of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. The Chicano Park murals consist of an assemblage of multiple vibrantly colored paintings on of the concrete pillars and two abutments that support the San Diego end of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge. Forty of these murals painted on twenty-four of pillars, abutments and ramps were constructed during the height of the Chicano Civil Rights Movement. These murals and their iconography depict images of Mexican pre-Columbian gods, legendary icons and myths, botanical elements, animal imagery, the Mexican colonial experience, revolutionary struggles, cultural and spiritual reaffirmation through the arts, Chicano achievements, identity and bicultural duality as symbolized in the search for the "indigenous self," Mexican and Chicano cultural heroes and heroines and scenes based on contemporary Chicano civil rights history. Today over 100 murals decorate the pillars of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge; however, the bulk of the murals were painted in the 1970's and 1980's, by the major Chicano artists of California. Barrio Logan's Chicano Park and the Chicano Park Murals appear to be eligible for the National Register under Criterion A at the local level of significance due to its critical association with the Chicano Civil Rights Movement and events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of the City of San Diego's political and social history. In 1997 Cherilyn Widell, California State Historic Preservation Officer concurred with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) 1996 State Historic Research Education Report for the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge that Chicano Park and the Chicano Park murals, although not yet 50 years old, meet the exceptional importance criterion for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and the California Register of Historical Resources. The San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge piers and supports that are grounded in Chicano Park are the "canvas" for the murals; the bridge must also be considered a contributing element of the Chicano Park murals.

Reexamining the Chicano civil rights movement of the 1960s and 1970s, In the Spirit of a New People brings to light new insights about social activism in the twentieth-century and new lessons for progressive politics in the twenty-first. Randy J. Ontiveros explores the ways in which Chicano/a artists and activists used fiction, poetry, visual arts, theater, and other expressive forms to forge a common purpose and to challenge inequality in America. Focusing on cultural politics, Ontiveros reveals neglected stories about the Chicano movement and its impact: how writers used the street press to push back against the network news; how visual artists such as Santa Barraza used painting, installations, and mixed media to challenge racism in mainstream environmentalism; how El Teatro Campesino’s innovative “actos,” or short skits, sought to embody new, more inclusive forms of citizenship; and how Sandra Cisneros and other Chicana novelists broadened the narrative of the Chicano movement. In the Spirit of a New People articulates a fresh understanding of how the Chicano movement contributed to the social and political currents of postwar America, and how the movement remains meaningful today.

Watchfulness shapes many Chicanxs' and other People of Color's everyday lives in San Diego. Experiencing racist discrimination can lead to becoming vigilant, which frames their subjectivity. Focusing particularly on Chicanxs, we show how they seek to intervene against structural inequalities and threats in their lives, such as by re-claiming space, consciousness raising, participating in protests, and healing practices. We argue that contestations surrounding belonging create particularly watchful selves and that this is a significant aspect of borderland lifeworlds more broadly. The book advances the Anthropology of borders, coloniality, subjectivity, and race, as well as contributing to Chicano and Latino Studies, and Urban Studies. Pushing the boundaries of conventional approaches, this book is methodologically innovative by including team fieldwork, digital ethnography, and illustrative work by a local artist. It fills a gap in Security Studies by examining peer-to-peer vigilance beyond top-down surveillance and bottom-up "sousveillance," and expanding previous understandings of watchfulness as an ambivalent practice that can also express care and contribute to community building, as well as representing a "way of life."

Am I Blue or Am I Green- ¿Azul o verde, cual soy yo? is a children's bilingual (Spanish and English) book that explores, through the eyes of a child, the differences between the Red, White and Blue of the American flag and the Green, White and Red of the Mexican flag. Topics covered include: Identity, Citizen Child, Chicano-Latino-Mexican-American Identity, Immigrant Identity, Bilingual (Spanish-English), Undocumented/Unauthorized Status, Mixed Status Family, Citizenship, Mexican Cultural Traditions, BIPOC, Resilience and Freedom. This bilingual (English/Spanish) children's book explores the feelings of a child who is an American Citizen and whose parents are Undocumented Immigrants. The child examines his life where he enjoys the American experience and lives in a home where his parents speak Spanish and practice the traditions of Mexico. Although he enjoys baseball and soccer, reggae and Rock en Español, he feels the fear of his parent's uncertain status. He explores the difference between being American and being an immigrant, and he acknowledges the "limbo" status that so many immigrants experience of not fully belonging to either country. Ultimately, he reaches an elegant solution, a coming to terms with his life and the richness he draws from two distinct cultural heritages. He is a symbol of resiliency and pride. This book focuses upon the Mexican- American/Chicano/a immigrant experience, but it is one that all immigrant communities can relate to while also providing an inside view from the child's point of view. It is fun and light-hearted while also emotional and moving at times. This is a great read for children in mixed status homes, for immigrant parents, for teachers and community members who interface with immigrant populations. It is an Insightful view of the challenging world of the child of immigrant parents in the United States and the beauty of resilience.
