by Sister Mary Antonine Goodchild, O.P. What a wonderful find this is: an ideal textbook on chant for junior high, high school, or really any age. It is mercifully free of verbiage or exaggerated detail. It is short and completely clear on all aspects of learning to chant (notes, rhythm, Latin, style), and it contains a vast amount of the basic repertoire, in neumes and with English translations. It even has study questions! Many of us have wished that such a book would be written. It took Fr. Samuel Weber to point out that such a book already exists, and now, praise be to God, it is in print again. As the title says, it is the perfect text for Church and school. It came out in 1944 but it isn't in the slightest bit dated. This is priced for mass distribution.

Since the spring of 1994 there have been sales of almost two million copies of the Angel recording of Chant, sung by the Benedictine monks of Santo Domingo de Silos in Spain. People are drawn irresistibly to its peaceful sound, but very few of them know anything about the tradition or meaning of Gregorian Chant or understand the language in which it is sung. In this companion book, which includes the full text of the Chant CD with translations from the Latin, Katharine Le Mee traces the historical and liturgical sources of the chant and provides answers to everyone's questions about what Gregorian Chant is, how it is written and sung, the latest research on its therapeutic qualities, and the extraordinary effect its simple, pure, unaccompanied tones can have on the body, mind, and heart. At a time when we are all feeling so overworked and under pressure, the calm, measured, almost transcendent sound of the monks singing these ancient melodies seems to put us in touch with our true selves. It is as though, in listening to their song, we share in the monks' aspirations, devotion, and experience. The sudden popularity of this music today -- after 1,300 years -- is indicative of the deep spiritual hunger manifesting everywhere. Here is a book that explains how and in what ways Gregorian Chant can begin to nourish us and transform our lives.

Entrances: Gregorian Chant in Daily Life is going to surprise you. Rembert Herbert locates the origins of chant, not in medieval monasticism as most would have it, but in the older wisdom of the Early Church fathers. If you have tried (and failed) to enter into the difficult, even alien scriptural commentaries of the fathers, Entrances will help. And once you are introduced to the mind (the "symbolic mind") and method of the fathers, you may read scripture and sing chant very differently. Entrances offers help, advice, and reassurance to those who long to form a choir and worship with this challenging, rewarding music. The style of singing used in chant -- so different from other Western music -- is examined in detail, and the systematic explanations of chant notation will alleviate most singers' fear of square notes, neumes, the occasional dragging punctum, and other oddities. To these basics have been added twelve appendices that offer information ranging from a pronunciation guide for "church Latin" to several liturgies, complete with commentary, rubrics, and musical settings. Book jacket.

Gregorian chant, the Catholic Church's very own music, is proper to the Roman liturgy, but during the course of its long history it has experienced periods of ascendancy and decline. A century ago, Pope Pius X called for a restoration of the sacred melodies, and the result was the Vatican Edition. This book presents for the first time in English the fully documented history of the Gregorian chant restoration. The original French edition was published by the Abbey of Solesmes in 1969.This book describes in careful, vivid detail the strenuous efforts of personalities like Dom Joseph Pothier, Dom Andre Mocquereau, Fr. Angelo de Santi, and Peter Wagner to carry out the wishes of the pope. The attentive reader will not fail to note that many of the questions so fervidly debated long ago are still current and topical today. Robert A. Skeris' introduction to this edition illuminates the current discussion with documentation, including the Preface to the Vatican Gradual and the Last Will and Testament written by Dom Eugene Cardine.
