Il s'adresse à M. Tiedeman, ami des spirites et d'Allan Kardec. Mais Tiedeman hésite. Pendant ce temps, Allan Kardec demande l'avis des guides, par l'entremise de Mme E. Dufaux. On lui répond de mettre son idée à exécution et de ne s'inquiéter de rien. « Je me hâtai, dit Allan Kardec, de rédiger le premier numéro et je le fis paraître le 1er janvier 1858, sans en avoir rien dit à personne. Je n'avais pas un seul abonné, et aucun bailleur de fonds. Je le fis donc entièrement à mes risques et périls, et n'eus pas lieu de m'en repentir, car le succès dépassa mon attente. A partir du 1er janvier, les numéros se succédèrent sans interruption, et, comme l'avait prévu l'Esprit, ce journal devint pour moi un puissant auxiliaire. Je reconnus plus tard qu'il était heureux pour moi de n'avoir pas eu de bailleur de fonds, car j'étais plus libre, tandis qu'un étranger intéressé aurait pu vouloir m'imposer ses idées et sa volonté, et entraver ma marche; seul, je n'avais de comptes à rendre à personne, quelque lourde que fût ma tâche comme travail. » Note de l'éditeur Afin d'ètre plus agréable lors de la lecture, cet ouvrage est conforme au format classique d'une revue scientifique.
